Windows Explorer is not responding
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:30:05 am »
 :teeth:
Hi Guys,

win 7 64bit

I have just upgraded my pc, motherboard, cpu, power supply, memory, added SSD drive.
Had the problem before and still got it.
Fresh install of win7, and all software.
BT/macafee anti virus and firewall.

I'm having the dreaded 'Windows explorer is not responding' problem.

Can't pin it down to any specific operation.

Sometimes when I open a window, sometimes when dragging a window, sometime it just stops working.

Run the 'Windows repair (all in one)' but still the same.

Any ideas?

Have you run a memory test yet and did a chkdsk on the drive to look for bad sectors?

I ask as it is always good to make sure it isnt hardware related :-)

Also does it happen in safe mode? I know that dome programs install Dll's that hook to to explorer.exe and those can cause it to lock like that as well.

I had a customer just today where the system was running very odd, slow, not responding at random places. Check the event viewer and tons of events of the hard drive having bad sectors. Had the drive do a chkdsk to look for bad sectors and ordered a new drive

I did the chkdsk because windows will flag the bad sectors to make sure not use them, that way the system stays up till the new drive comes and I can clone everything to the new drive.

Brand new memory, but check it, its good.
Brand new SSD drive, again checked good.
Brand new motherboard.
Fresh install of win7.

Trouble is that it doesn't happen too often to run in safe mode.

OK so it isnt happening very often.

Have you tried uninstalling mcafee to see if it helps at all? I do know that it is hooked into the system.

Also have you made sure you have all the current drivers for all your hardware and all the current Windows updates?
