The current repair has failed to start xxx times
« on: May 08, 2020, 05:50:33 am »
Hello all,
I started with windows repair 2019 when I started to be unable to launch a command prompt: a prompt windows appears very briefly then diseappears.
The thing is I cannot run any test, it always ends up with:  "The current repair has failed to start xxx times", whichever "repair" I select.

sfc /scannow returns errors but fix them.
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup ends up successfully
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ends up successfully

Note: when I click on "start repairs", I see the same thing as in my "original" problem: a grey prompt window appears and diseappears  very quickcly

Oh and I'm in safe mode, under windows 10 pro v1909 ver 18363.778

many thanks in advance
s.

If you were unable to open a Command Prompt (Admin) how were you able to run those commands, or have I misunderstood you ?

Do you have the latest version of the repair program - www.tweaking.com

Can you uninstall the repair program, reboot then reinstall and try again.

If it continues to fail, open Event Viewer, ensure Event Viewer (Local) is highlighted - if it isn't, just click on it.

When it has read the data, click on Error then on View All Instances of This Event in the lower right pane where you will see date and time stamped errors.

Click on one that coincides with you trying the repair program and more info will appear in the pane below.

Let me know what it reports.

Thanks for your reply.

I found the solution on another forum looking for my command prompt window issue.
I used this reg key, the cmd prompt worked again and I could successfully run twindows repair tools.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"Autorun"=""

I wasn't sure what you meant about the Command Prompt but glad you found the solution.

Can you explain what you had to do or provide a link to that forum post.

This could help others with the same problem.

My problem was:
When I open Start > Run, type cmd.exe and press Enter, a black window shows up and disappears immediately.
The same happened when I ran the repairs using Windows Repair 2019: a grey window showed up and disappeared immediatly, and after a while I got the "The current repair has failed to start xxx times" message in the UI.
So this is why I tried to fix my command prompt issue.

In my regedit I only have Command Processor and Autorun isn't listed, which is why I asked for a link to that forum post or what you did.

My cmd prompt works fine.

I see. In my case the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor had a value "Autorun" set to "Exit". When I deleted it everything came back to normal :)

That's good but I prefer to run ESET's Online Scanner for a comprehensive scan.

That's great news - I think it's always best to get a second opinion with more than one scanner just in case.
