Hi Tom - I ran into a problem creating the DVD from ISO:  No authority; see message.
But, I got around that by using another machine as the ISO was on NAS.
I will attach a partial list of the drivers folder in the next post.
Am installing now.
Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Tom,

Some kind of problem.
On bootup the machine asked "press any key to boot from cd or dvd"
I did that and the machine read the disc for a while, but did not display any messages or list any files loading.
There was just a blinking cursor for 10 minutes.
should i have tried to load it from the existing system running?

It probably would have been a lot easier to create the bootable disk if you had saved the ISO to your Downloads folder.

Yes - the repair install is done from within Windows but it should still have booted up and eventually took you to the Install screen.

I'm just hoping that the ISO hasn't been corrupted because I think it will only let you download it the once.

What normally happens when you boot up with an install disk is after pressing any key to boot from CD/DVD, is that you are presented with an inverse window with Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] highlighted where you then just press enter and then the machine goes on to load the files.

For the repair install which is also known as in place upgrade, go Start - Computer - insert the install disk where AutoPlay should open to the Setup.exe for you to click on where the process should start.

OK, Tom.

Maybe I did not give you enough info.

The firs time I downloaded the ISO the file was too short, so I immediately downloaded again and it was longer.

Sure enough when I tried to make the DVD with the first download, the MS DVD creator said "invalid ISO".
So, when I tried with he second one, the DVD was created "OK."  <--- this is the one that only gave me a blinking cursor.

So, frustrated, I went through every disc I had and found a backup of the original Dell disc that I made years ago.
This booted up to the loading files point and I stopped it.  I am just wondering why I kept this disc separate from all my other W7 install stuff.  I can not remember. I am trying to remember if there was anything wrong with this disc.  Can't think of anything.

So, now, should I use this old disc or should I use the newly downloaded one with a live Win 7 going on the machine?

... well, I thought about this for a while and decided to see what would happend by booting to the found disc.

I booted and it loaded files and gave me option to repair system on the "e" drive --- no other windows on system so I figured it made my C into and "e" drive.

But, now I am at a point where I have more choices and do not know which one to shoose:

SYSTEM REPAIR (says it has to do with Windows starting problems --- so not sure here)
SYSTEM RESTORE (i DO NOT HAVE A RESTORE DISC)
SYSTEM IMAGE RECOVERY (NEEDS EARLIER CREATED SYSTEM IMAGE WHCH i DO NOT HAVE)
MEMORY
COMMAND PROMPT

I will await your further instructions, Tom.  I willjust leave the system like this until I hear from you.

Thanks again for your help.

Okay then.

Were you always connected to the Internet for the first download ?

Win 7 x64 Home Premium SP1 ISO is about 3.09GB - what is the size of the second ISO you downloaded ?

Go Start - Computer - insert that disk then when AutoPlay opens, click on Setup.exe to see if it will proceed with the repair install.

Is your system a 32 bit ?

When you boot up with install media, it doesn't always see your system as being in C: - nothing to worry about there.

Go Start - Computer - insert the Dell disk and click on Setup.exe when AutoPlay opens and see if it performs the repair install.

You could of course try downloading the ISO from MS again but save it to your Downloads folder so the Burner Tool will be able to find it.

Hi Tom,

It has been going since yesterday.  Earlier this morning it was on stage 2 and 49% done.  Now it is at 53% done.  So, I have adjusted to the idea that it will not be done until tomorrow.  That is good as long as things get fixed.

I did what you said:  Went to the disc and opened the setup.  There was one odd message near the start about a DLL.  See attachment.

No, I and Win 7 Ultimate 64b.

When I did a trial repair install on my Win 7 Home Premium a couple of days ago, I got an error message about a missing file and the repair install wouldn't start, although I can't remember which file it was.

I resolved this by creating another Win 7 install disk which went onto to perform the repair install until I got the error message about there being insufficient space.

This relates to the size of the System Reserved Partition, although that was 400MB - C: has 171GB free.

That machine is now in a repair shop where I've asked for that partition to be increased and I'll try it again when I get it back.

The procedure shouldn't be taking as long as that but because it is still working, you will need to wait until it completes or rolls back, but I would suggest that whatever happens, you try to download the ISO again to create another install disk and perform the repair install again.

That .DLL as far as I know is for VMware network library - whatever that is but as it appeared as soon as you started the repair install, then I have to assume it should have been included in the ISO - but not sure on that.

It may have something to do with what you already have installed but the ISO doesn't have it.

Check to see what you have when the repair install completes or rolls back.

I've checked the size of my Win 7 x64 ISO and that is the same size as yours.

Thanks for the update.

I don't understand why it's taking so long - is this with the Dell disk or the one you created ?

I think mine got to about 74% of the last phase before I got the error I did and that was only after 2hrs.

However, all you can do is wait.

In stopping the repair install I would have been worried that you could have been left with nothing, but glad that has gone smoothly.

If you can repeat the process of the repair install then go ahead with that.

Don't forget that it is done from within Windows.

Hopefully with a more recent ISO it shouldn't take as long.

Your old Dell disk may not have included SP1.

OK, so this means that I should write the ISO ti DVD disc and go to that disc and run setup.com on that disc?  Or, is there some way to do it directly with the ISO image.

I've only ever known a repair install to be performed with either an USB or disk.

Have a read through this tutorial - have you been able to back up your drivers folders either onto an USB or DVD, although a DVD may not be big enough if you say one of the folders was as big as it was.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Could one of those drivers be for your NAS which perhaps you could uninstall until you have completed the repair install.

I've had my System Reserved Partition increased in size and am currently performing a repair install on that Win 7 machine and hopefully I won't get that insufficient space error again.

If this goes to completion I'll be better placed to see what differences there are but others on the forum have performed a repair install and reported their machines working fine after.

Back to the drawing board - same insufficient space error.
