won't boot
« on: January 04, 2019, 09:08:21 am »
I put in new updated windows 10 from my thumb drive with the boot media but every time it booted up I would get black screen with "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key" I went to my BIOS and as far as I can tell it is set up right. I have to go the old F12 button to get it to boot up!!!! OK when it came up to install I pick keep personal files an app.?? I hope that was OK ??? Also it could not find my thumb drive it would not let boot up from it.Thanks for any help

I don't know what has happened there but when you get it to boot up via F12, does that get you into Windows ?

If it does then turning off Fast startup can help.

Also if you have an UEFI BIOS then turning off Secure Boot may be needed for it to boot from a Flash drive.

If you can then get it to boot from the Flash drive, I would suggest you use the Reset option that preserves your personal stuff but will delete any installed programs, so if you have any paid for programs you will need their product keys.

I'm not sure if the bootrec cmds from the Command Prompt would resolve this.

They are -

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /rebuildbcd

There's also the Startup Repair but I've never known that to work, although it is advocated that you run that up to three times.

yes,it boot right up when F12 opens and it has always been this way my CD drive is at the top and my C drive right below it.I can not move them only highlight the one I need. The same way in my BIOS I went to boot configuration or some like that,I think my CD drive is on top but I can not move them only highlight save it and close.I will try the command prompt will let you know. But if they do not work go ahead and do and full install again using my thumb drive??? Thanks for all your help I will be in touch....Scott

If you can boot up with the thumb drive then when you get to the Install screen you can select Repair your computer which will get you to Troubleshoot/Advanced options where you could try the Reset option.

You'll also be able to select the other options from there as well, but you won't have any restore points to choose from.

Okay - can you create another install flash drive should that one have become corrupt to give you the problem in the first place ?

I would disconnect the external one as that can confuse things but if it still doesn't see your OS then I would do the clean install onto where you normally have the OS.

If it can see your OS you can go that route.

Can you boot up with the install USB, navigate to the Install screen and select Repair your computer then onto the recovery environment to select Command Prompt.

At the prompt enter bcdedit |find "osdevice"

For clarity that is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

If it finds it, it will give a partition letter which may or not be C: but use that partition letter instead of the x I have used and enter this cmd -

chkdsk x: /r

This will tell you if it has found and "repaired" any KBs in bad sectors.

You may need to disable Secure Boot to boot from an USB where an UEFI BIOS is used.

I don't have any experience of an UEFI BIOS but it could be in the UEFI Settings in the advanced options or in the BIOS.

EDIT - I've found this article as a guide - https://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-secure-boot-in-windows

If you can get it to boot normally then you can perform a chkdsk /r from a normal Command Prompt (Admin).

I don't know what that core isolation is you were looking for but there was no mention of it in that article.

As an after thought, if you are unable to boot up with the install USB - how did you manage to perform a clean install ?

It's when you said you had done a clean install, that would need to be done with the install USB.

Has your machine booted okay ?

That's good news - how is it performing ?

You can usually move the CD/DVD, USB and HDD drives with F5 or F6 in the BIOS.
