[SOLVED] Windows update error 80073701

First time using this forum.  Appreciate any help i can get!

Running Windows 7 Professional 6.1.7601.23934 64bit SP1

I have been getting a windows update error for the past 2 weeks while trying to install KB4056894 update.  Ill list off all the things ive tried so far to get this update to install and hopefully some one will have a better idea of what the problem is.

I have tried installing the standalone version of the KB4056894 (returns a failed error but no code)

I have tried the WindowsUpdate.diagcab tool from Windows website (which returns an error 0x80070490)

I have also tried the Update Readiness Tool as well.  Which says it installs properly with no errors.

I downloaded the Windows Repair Tool v4 from your website and tried the repair windows update preset. (safemode as well) No change.  Update still fails to install.

The pre-scan log shows that i am missing 1781 package files. (seems like a lot...)  Which is probably the issue. (attached the prescan log)

I tried taking the KB numbers from the log and downloading each one individually and installing them, but when i try to they say  "The update is not applicable to your computer"

So i bought a license to the program to give the "missing pack files - reg cleanup" a try and see if it would help.  The scan shows all the missing files and they are all checked missing, but after running it (safemode) the files still show up as missing.

I've also tried a SFC scan as well which returned no issues.

I would like to not have to clean install to fix this or update to windows 10 so any help would be appreciated.

I think that update has been withdrawn, especially for AMD machines because of the problems it was causing.

It was giving me a BSOD on my Toshiba Win 7 AMD laptop.

If it keeps being presented, right click on it and select Hide.

Can you go Start - type cmd then right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC then type these cmds, press enter after each then run the Pre-Scan again after the reboot to see if it still reports those files as missing.

net stop cryptsvc

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start cryptsvc

shutdown /r /t 00

Does it make a difference that i do not have an AMD processor?

I have an I7-4790k.  My understanding was that this update was supposed to resolve security issues with Intel processors.

I ran those commands through (changed the C:\ to F:\ because my windows install is on the F drive, hope thats ok if not i can run them again)

Ran pre-scan again.  Same result

They may have pulled it altogether but it was supposed to counter the threat of Meltdown and Spectre.

One affects Intel and the other AMD/ARM but I can't remember which at the moment.

I've just done a manual check for updates on my Win 7 machine and KB4056894 wasn't offered.

However, it did offer KB4057400 as an optional update which is the Preview of KB4056894.

This is the first time I've been offered this update so I'm currently installing it to see what happens - it's 231.7MB.

I'll let you know how that turns out.

I don't know if MS has had the update differentiate between AMD, ARM and Intel so as not to offer it to AMD and ARM machines, but I would assume they have pulled it for now until they resolve the problems it has been causing on those machines.

However, antivirus programs need to be updated to set a registry key so that the update will install as you will read in that article.

Which antivirus program at you using ?

I wonder if it makes any difference that your system is on F: and not C: that the Package repairs didn't work.

I've asked about this as I don't have another suggestion to resolve the missing cat and mum files and 1781 are too many to manually replace from another like machine.

I also got that optional update as well.  Just showed up yesterday.  It also fails to install with the same error.

I am using Webroot SecureAnywhere 9.0.  I've tried disabling it and everything else to install the update, but no change.

As far as the Missing Package Cleanup.  It does have all the files being on the F:\ when it shows them. (attached image)

It runs for a very long time, but completes with no errors reported.  After a reboot and a re-scan they still show up as missing.

Edit:  i checked that Kb article and navigated to that registry key.  The key is there for me. (cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc)

There used to be a guy on the www.sysnative.com forum who would do what used to be manually done on this forum for missing cat and mum files, but someone has posted with the same error code as you.

It may be worthwhile registering on there to see if he can resolve yours as well and may be those missing cat and mum files.

You could try uninstalling that KB that he first suggested to see if that works for you but as the helper has said, the rest of the fix only applies to the person asking for help.

BTW - KB4057400 has installed okay on my Win 7.

I'm going to have to shoot off now but will be back later.

I followed as far as i could with his instructions until it says not to.

Hope this can be resolved.  Kind of worried that more of the updates that come down the line will also fail to install because of these errors.

You may have to wait a couple of days for a reply as that guy did, but I'll follow it from your link - thanks for that.

If you run another sfc /scannow and then copy & paste this cmd it will put an icon onto the desktop which when double clicked will open the CBS log in Notepad, but you can right click on the icon - Send to and then select Compressed zipped.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This is a much reduced CBS log as it just reports what it could and couldn't fix so should be easier to attach.

When i run the SFC scan it reports no integrity issues (attached is the log from the extra command).

I ran CCleaner and it cleaned out the logs in the CBS folder and now its down to under 30 mb.  I have the previous CBS folder which is  24GB saved in case its useful somehow.

Ill patiently wait for a reply from the other site.  No issues.  Its been 2 weeks with this problem and i play with it a little bit each day trying something new.

Sometimes trying the updates in a clean boot can resolve where there's a conflict either in your start up menu items or the non-Microsoft services.

Did you need to change c: to f: in that cmd ?

I'm sorry I did not notice that there was a C: there when i copied it.

I do have a C: drive but it does not have my windows installation on it.

Re-ran the SFC scan and re-did the command with F: in place.

Returns error FINDSTR: Cannot read file list from [SR]

Sometimes trying the updates in a clean boot can resolve where there's a conflict either in your start up menu items or the non-Microsoft services.

I have run this program a few times.  It always returns the same result.  (Says it fixes many things and has 1 error 0x80070490)

I've read through a few articles about how to fix that error and its how i found this forum!

Going back to your missing cat and mum files, it's been a while since someone has reported that many missing that I had forgotten that Shane had found that where this involved an Intel machine - sometimes updating the Chipset drivers can resolve those.

I had also read that somewhere.

I have ran the update utility for my motherboard and Intels update utility from their website. (Intel® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility))

Both say that everything is up to date.  Not sure if there is a better way of doing chipset driver updates.  Not very familiar with it.

On my Toshiba Intel laptop I use the update driver option in Device Manager but where you have a purpose built machine then the motherboard support is the best place to check for them.

Just been following your thread on the Sysnative forum.

I normally hide KB2952664 as it's a Telemetry update sending info back to MS, but go to Installed Updates and type KB2952664 in the top right search box to see if it comes up - if it does then right click on it and select Uninstall, but tell your Sysnative helper what you have tried or if it says not found.

I tried to uninstall that kb2952664, but it wont allow it.  Just says "An error has occurred.  Not all updates were successfully uninstalled."

I couldn't view the Checksur log because you have to be registered on the forum but he must have seen something that caused him concern about it - just have a bit of patience and he'll get back to you.

Here the current contents of my checksur.log

Its not probably the same as what the one was for him because i had tried a few more things since the last time he replied.  Ran the SURT a few more times.  Ran the windows repair tool again.

The bright side is that the Pre-scan now shows i have no missing package files, but the checksur.log itself still shows some issues.

Feels like its so close to being fixed,  but its probably just because 13 errors is much better then 1781!

Yes, that is a vast improvement - but it still seems to report similar.

Hopefully he'll get you there.

I'll have to try and find a tutorial for how to use FRST but you would still need to know what to look for and that is where experience comes in.
