Replace WLM 2011 with WLM 2012
« on: December 28, 2016, 09:40:12 am »
Hello ALL, my wife has WLM 2011 on her updated from W7 to W10 computer and I would like to replace it with WLM 2012. Is it a straight overwrite or a different procedure? I am not worried losing all the custom folders as I can remake them afresh. I would also ensure that all folders content are backed up to her external USB HDD by using MailStore before the changeover. Thanks.

- I assume you mean Windows Live Mail ??
- Always make a backup first of ALL the emails and then upgrade to the newest version.
- Support for WLM completely ends after january 2017.

- Currently my personal favourite email program is Outlook Express Classic. This is a "stand alone" program that also works on Win 10. (I used WLM for a while and I HATE(D) it).

Hello Willy2, Yes, it is Windows Live Mail and am aware of MS's plan to stop support for WLM. I was considering installing Thunderbird on both computers as a replacement. I will look up OEClassic and see what that has to offer so thanks.

Hello Willy2, Having looked at the OEClassic website and decided it could be what I am looking for I then checked on Mailstore Home and it appears it does not work with OEClassic according to someone who set the question some three years ago. I may well install Thunderbird as that is catered for in Mailstore Home.

- Isn''t it possible to customize Mail Storage for OE Classic ? The storage structure of OE Classic is surprisingly simple. Much simpler than in Thunderbird.

Hi Willy2, I use Mailstore Home, a free program to backup emails to an external HDD and Mailstore Home lists the email clients it caters for.

Willy2, Mailstore Home shows a list of email clients it caters for and OEClassic is not listed although Thunderbird is.

- I am not familiar with the MailStore Home program but the homepage says that it works with any IMAP & POP3 mail server. It's therefore not dependent on the email client (e.g. OE Classic & Thunderbird)
- Although OE Classic (OEC) only supports POP3 (support for IMAP is planned for the next version), I would assume that MailStore Home can be customized for OE Classic.
- OE Classic is not that popular and therefore I understand that MailStore Home doesn't have support for this program (up to now). Whereas it support for Thunderbird. Quite logic.
