Keyboard and mouse not working in Safe Mode of Windows 10 1607
« on: September 26, 2016, 06:15:05 am »
Hi,

after updating my Windows 10 x64 pro to version 1607 I can not use Safe Mode as keyboard and mouse don't work.

I am searching internet for about one week and I tried any suggestion found:

- copyed the register keys HKLM\CurrentControSet\System\...SafeBoot\ from a working PC with same OS

- used any kind of USB and PS2 devices

- logged the boot in safe mode to try to identify the driver or process relating to USB, keyboard an mouse

- tried reinstalling a copy of Windows 10 x64 1607, keeping my programs and files

Nothing works!

If I use a WinPE boot disk, or a recovery media done on another Win10 PC, or a Win 10 x64 1607  image disk, going to recovery mode, I have keyboard and mouse working. If I do a recovery disk with my PC, keyboard and mouse don't work when I boot from the recovery disk, in any PC I tried (about 3, standard and UEFI BIOS).

I uninstalled the logitech mouse and ketboard drivers, cancelled the drivers and leftover files from control panel>hardware devices, from disk C: and from register. I used a noname USB keyboard and mouse, controlling that drivers used are default ones from Microsoft but in safe mode they don't work. In normal mode they work perfectly.

I don't want to install the SO from scratch, too many days needed to restore today programs and configuration.

The only strange thing that I noted is that the log of boot in safe mode is a lot different from the one obtained from a PC that has keyboard and mouse working normally in safe mode.

It seems that safe boot mode is not loading at all the drivers and processes listed in the registry key "SafeBoot", but loading from other part of registry.

Someone can suggest me something more to do?

Thanks!

BIOS by sure at 99% is not responsible, as I have keyboard and mouse working if I boot a Win10 1607 installation CD or a repair USB key generated by a PC (Win10 1607) where safe mode is working. So drivers loaded are able to interface to BIOS.

As noted in my first message, if I generate a repair USB key from the PC, where in the safe mode keyboard and mouse are not working, booting this key in any PC cause the keyboard and mouse not working.

Probably a super guru of Windows safe mode is needed to teach me how to solve this issue.

Without knowing how drivers and services are loaded in memory during safe mode boot, I can not do anything more.

The registry keys at HKLM\...\SafeBoot\... are the correct one but the drivers and services loaded and logged in ntbt.log are not exactly the ones listed in registry keys.

I will keep searching and testing...

In Device Manager when you right click on either the mouse or keyboard and select Update Driver Software - Browse my Computer - Let me pick.... is there more than one driver to choose from that you can install ?

The nbt for Safe Mode will be different for normal mode as it only loads essential drivers, but it should load the mouse and keyboard in either mode.

Doing what you suggested, I found two valid drivers for keyboard: "hid compliant keyboard" and "hid compliant device".

Bye.

Try each to see if it resolves the problem.

I will try but I think safe mode is using a different way to chose the drivers to load and in normal mode both keyboard and mouse do work.

It should be loading the same drivers.

As the keyboard and mouse don't work in Safe Mode it will be difficult for you to check Device Manager, but when in that mode, disconnect each and re-plug to see if their drivers are reinstated for them to work.

I've had a computer that had a similar issue. it would not work with the mouse at all keyboard worked fine and switched out to another usb port same issue then I updated the driver same issue persisted.  what I ended up doing was refreshing the pc without deleting the files.

I try not to refresh, as I would lose any app configuration.
I tried two times to reinstall with the Win10 x64 1607 DVD image, keeping app and files, but no luck.
Now I am working on DriverStore and on enum hive in registry...who knows.

It's possible that Windows is turning the power off to them in Safe Mode.

Go into Device Manager/USB Controllers, right click on each USB Root Hub - select Properties and under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Thanks for suggestion, I will try this too.
I am more concentrated on driver store, where the keyboard driver is not listed using pnputil program, even if there is the folder and files inside.
I tried with pnputil.exe -a -i to install the keyboard driver package in driver store, but I got an error.
My next try is to get the driverstore keys from registry from another PC and merge with my PC where keyboard and mouse are not working in safe mode.

Crossing my fingers.

This WE I solved my problem but I don't know how.  :shy:
I breaked my Marvell RAID0 and after some restores using Acronis 2016 and using WinRE boot fix, as original restore was not able to finish the boot, I was able to boot to my desktop.
At this point in safe mode both keyboard and mouse are still not working, but I noted that drivers of mouse and keyboard were reverted to Windows 10 default ones.
Then I used the original Win10 1607 x64 image burned in a DVD to do a refresh of installation, keeping apps and personal files.

As soon as it finished its job, I have luckly the keyboard and mouse working on safe mode!
Probably Windows installer this time detected something wrong on driver management and changed it to default clean installation procedure.
Unfortunately what I did is not a solution but a miracle that worked in my configuration.

Was that a 1511 10586 install disk or a later one that included the Anniversary Update ?

The refresh was done with 1607 Anniversary image, the same that is installed in the PC.

It was just that you had said the problem occurred after the AU and that you used the original install disk.

I was not able to explain correctly.
I intended "original" as the ISO image taken from Microsoft and burned to DVD. It was always the 1607 Win 10 x 64 italian.

After each update the Media Creation Tool is also updated so I create a new bootable ISO disk after each release and mark the disk envelope with each date.

There was another Cumulative update yesterday which is KB3194798 and is about 750MB in size.

I hope I am not obliged soon to refresh my OS installation.

I only had one problem following that update and that was when creating a system image which froze a couple of inches in.

Normally a CAPI2 Event ID 513 will cause that but I didn't have any, but ran the fix anyway and the image completed okay next time around.

I have yet to create a system image on my other upgraded laptop, so I'll see if it's specific to the update or just machine specific.

Boggin, has he tried to delete all instances of related USB devices, keyboard and mouse last... then restart to see the results.
Delete the software and let win10 install its native drivers...

?
