I'd meant the registry restore option in the WR program.

So, I should start WR,
first restore registry to the state before I ran it firs time
run WR again
then run the non-destructive reinstall?

No, don't run WR again - just restore to prior the first run then do the non-destructive reinstall.

Something is obviously conflicting with what WR has repaired or tried to repair and the condition of your system.

Let me know if you have any problems with WR's registry restore as I'm going to have to shove off shortly.

Thanks, I had no problem with WR registry restore.

This nondestructive reinstall though seems rather sensitive to the actual Windows version. I run the Enterprise edition, will it work with it?

I can use my system with minor difficulties, so I may wait a while more, possibly some other way opens up.

The principle would appear to be the same, but do you have a Win 8.1 Enterprise disk ?

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

If you don't then you may have to go with a Refresh or Reset as I don't think you would be able to use a created Win 8.1 Pro disk as it wouldn't match your version - but I suppose you could try it first if need be.

Just as an after thought, do you have MBAM and Bitdefender installed as there have been occurrences when these two have been installed have caused the same type of BSOD because of a compatibility problem.

Conflicts with security programs can cause a myriad of problems that can manifest in different ways.

However, since you still get the /restorehealth problem in Safe Mode where all 3rd party programs are isolated, then Windows Firewall could also be getting in the way, as it isn't always infallible and sometimes exclusions need to be made in its settings.

If the repair install isn't an option then I'd go for the Refresh or Reset options.

Yes, I run Bitdefender and MBAM, as you pointed out though, they can't interfere in safe mode.
I'm not in a case of emergency, so I run a few more turns, if no better I resort to the brute methods.

If you uninstall MBAM it will probably stop the BSODs.

This uninstaller will remove all bits -https://support.malwarebytes.org/customer/portal/articles/1835311?b_id=6438

Sorry, I can't follow. Didn't you say in safe mode it's all the same?

No, in Safe Mode no 3rd party programs are loaded but where an AV program will disable Windows Firewall if it doesn't use aspects of it, Windows Firewall will be activated in Safe Mode.

Is that what you meant ?

You suggested to uninstall MBAM. I understand it may interfere when it's turned on, i.e. in normal mode.
In safe mode though, what does it matter if MBAM is or is not installed?

If you are also getting your BSODs in Safe Mode then uninstalling it won't have any effect - but your BSODs are occurring in normal mode - aren't they ?

I have these two programs for years. BSOD occurs recently only, and apparently random. Lately, I had some problems with VPN, so I tried afc and restorehealth, both failed. That's why I turned to this forum, and these failures also occur in safe mode.

Security programs go through a transition because of their Definition updates.

At one time there was a conflict between Norton 360 and MBAM and both had to come to a compromise.

I appreciate /restorehealth isn't working in Safe Mode either, but do the BSODs also occur in Safe Mode ?

If not then uninstall MBAM and then see if anything works any better.

I use safe mode for specific purpose, a few minutes only, so I don't know if BSOD would occur.
Now it hasn't for nearly a day in normal mode. If it returns, I will try to uninstall MBAM.

Okay - are you going to proceed with the non-destructive install or the Refresh/Reset ?

I hope I can find something else. I'm afraid of recovering all my personalization, as settings, preferences, background pictures, etc. Also, my problems are not preventing me from using the system. At the moment I look and see. If the situation is worsening, I will try the non-destructive method first, possibly refresh in the second round.

You're not not sure, I'm obviously way less. I only wait and hope.

Without going back through the thread, have you tried creating another admin account to see if you get the same problems ?

Not yet. I'm not sure how I installed Bitdefender and MBAM, for my account only or for everybody.

MBAM won't be a problem as you can always reinstall that - I can't remember if it has an all users option but AV programs protect the computer regardless of users as far as I know as that is what is licensed.
