W 7 update issue_error RC_DataStore code 0X800F081F
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:45:25 pm »
Good evening all. W7 Update issue has been with me for the last few days.
Current behaviour “Checking for updates” runs for many hours without detecting any.
Troubleshooting steps taken,
I installed MS “fix” KB 3135445, nada.
Ran Fix WU Utility v 1.0 ( This utility will re-register a total of 114 .dll,* ocx and .ax files which are required for the proper functioning of Windows Updates. ) nada.
Cleared Windows Update Cache, following correct procedure.nada.
Ran Windows update diagnostic.diagcab which detected issues, (see attch result 1 & result 2) which flagged an error RC_DataStore code 0X800F081F. I have tried researching this to no avail.
I then ran a repair utility from the reputable “tweaking.com” the log attch “Repair_Windows_Updates” which may reveal info to those wiser than me .
I also attch a list of current updates in the system the last being Net Framework 4.6.1.
The Dell laptop is clean of infections / malware and stable. Security essentials updates do run well. So I'm out of ideas now and welcome your input .

A manual check for updates taking ages in Win 7 has been a widespread problem for a little while now and just waiting for them to come, usually has been the only solution - although manually installing a couple of specific updates has oiled the wheels for some.

You seem to have a different problem though and one I've never seen before and MS don't seem to give any help for that error in Win 7, other than perhaps to run a sfc /scannow.

See what the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) can do.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/what-is-the-system-update-readiness-tool

This is a little over a 500MB download and also does a check for updates so can also take a while to run and when done, you can view its log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Double click on the Checksur one and that will open in Notepad - but first, run the Pre-Scan in Option 2 of Windows Repair and if there is any Package File corruption, open a thread in the Cat and Mum File Requests section, posting the Pre-Scan report.

Thanks for the reply. SFC scannow detected as all well. Its late here so I'l try that tool tomo. You have reminded me that Belarc Advisor also detects & identifies missing updates.
Can you see anything helpfull in the tweaking repair log ?

I think I had similar in my WR log, but it's the Pre-Scan in Option 2 of the program I want you to run to see if that reports corruption as that can affect Windows Updates.

Well Boggin, The readiness tool "Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86" came in at 233.5 megs. I ran it for a few hours as it was searching for updates, nada!
I ran the repair twice in safe mode & the open phase gave the all clear in the 3 scans. I attch logs generated, I assume the two logs "28.04.2016_xxx" give results for both runs. You can view the full folder if you have the time in the links below. Easier than a string of .txt files.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oq4k62a5uylasfb/AAAtziUfAOkth9EYKW9ZJr-Da?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ie6tospo9irbao8/AACWMQFy4cRk9xXsvPhOdbZYa?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nhaseie77b9ihhl/chkdsk_full_log.txt?dl=0

So I'l run the update again and see if there is any change in behavior.
A curious issue indeed...

Your first link returned Preview Failed but I was able to look at them in the second.

Because I'm not sure what the Access Denied means in those error logs, I've emailed Shane to have a look at them - just hope he has time to do so.

Possibly another piece of the jigsaw, I attch a list of the missing updates detected with Belarc. When checked against the list of installed updates I posted earlier we may see the integrity of the sequence ? I know I'm reaching here!
I downloaded the updates from MS and on installing them it riggers "searching for updates" dialog box. So the issue covers both detection & install of these stand alone KBs.

Onward...

So when you reregistered those files, are those the ones in Step 5 of this MS article ?

i believe so, I used the "fix". Ran Windows update diagnostic.diagcab which detected issues, (see attch result 1 & result 2) which flagged an error RC_DataStore code 0X800F081F.

Use the Fix it button and then choose the aggressive mode - will be quicker than using the cmd prompt and then reboot before trying the updates again.

I think that Fix it is supposed to reset the RC Data Store.

I've been having another dig around for fix for the 0x800F081F error and it would seem that either SURT or a repair install are the only options.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/windows-update-error-800f081f

Run SURT again then forget about it until it completes then see what it reports in the Checksur log as I've previously described.

I think you are going to have to have some patience on this.

Huh I wonder it you need to reset bits I was reading through your log and i saw it pop up with missing qmgr.dat and im assuming since it could not find the catroot folder it was already deleted no worries there windows rebuilds that with the cryptographic service. Hmmmm have you done a prescan yet? That's the scan tool in option 2 it does not repair just checks. If you have missing files I would like to see that log.

Nice one Julian ! Ran your code & then update which detected and installed a bunch of updates. I'm happy to delete the blunderbuss of failed "fix" solutions I had been polluting my system with before you & Boggin chimed in. Maybe you can post this event in "User submitted guide" section.
I'll post your elegant solution on another tech support forum, it might accelerate their learning curve
As we say here in Ireland "May your bed never be empty"
Both Max & I are now in a state of happiness.

You may want to let MS know as well Julian, because their only suggestion is to run the SURT and if that doesn't work then it's a repair install.

What does the "pause" bit do in that cmd ?

a pause Gives time for the user to shutdown and save programs before restarting windows and also gives time for the services to restart and make the folders. But usually when I see the pause im like alright lets restart the beast up and see if she runs purring. Because when you reboot the computer that's when all the fiLes rebuilds.

So you would still need to exit the cmd window to shutdown, or does the pause do that or is it waiting for you to hit any key for it to proceed, rather than executing the batch file immediately - even though a reboot may be required for the batch file to effect ?

Well when you see the pause you should be good to go to reboot so instead it can be changed from a pause to shutdown /r /t 00 if necessary. the pause just pauses the batch file ill have to ask Shane in further detail I mean he is the one who showed me this.  :cheesy:
