Windows Activation/Update error 80070424 with KB971033
« on: June 25, 2015, 04:16:08 am »
Hi all,

Does anyone have any knowledge about the topic subject? After my recent move and hiatus and earlier trojan then system image restore I decided to do another repair install rather than a clean install on my W7 x64 SP1 Dell desktop, just to see if I could get it updated. So far WU does appear to be checking (sometimes!) for updates (190 found) but haven't got round to installing any yet. I've also removed and reinstalled the .NET framework following Shane's advice on another thread, and is all on and verified and fine  :artist: I also installed a hotfix rollup from one of the other threads (maybe jraju's?) which apparently MS rolled out but didn't advertise, and this went on ok.

So I had a fairly fresh repair install system, did an ALLInOne repair to try and reset everything with Shane's program, then at some point yesterday a pop up appeared saying my copy of Windows wasn't genuine - like WTF!!  :omg: An option to 'resolve online now' was used which lead to a download of WindowsActivationUpdate.exe, which I installed, but no change. slui.exe wouldn't work and gave an error of 80070424, as did WU. The System page on Control Panel said Windows wasn't activated, although Belarc gave the correct product key! Attempted validation using the correct product key (which I also did on the repair install) gave me the same error again and said it couldn't be validated or completed.

Googling this error lead me to issues with KB971033, which was present on the Installed Updates list and went on yesterday (surprise!), presumably while I was checking for updates? I never got as far as installing any myself so it's slipped on by itself somehow . One of the "fixes" I found is to uninstall this update, so I've done that, rebooted, and all seems ok now - the product key is showing on System, slui is working and saying Acivation was successful, and WU is checking without giving me the 80070424 error, so I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this or how to prevent it, or whether 971033 is going to keep re-installing itself and throwing up this validation error? It IS a genuine OEM copy of Windows so this is a new one on me...

The error is from the Windows Modules Installer service, which is the trustedinstaller.exe

This is not normal for it to have trouble, so first thing I would do is check the drive for bad sectors to make sure no system files are on one.

Open a cmd.exe window as administrator. Then put in

chkdsk c: /r

It will say the drive is in use and would you like to schedule it, hit Y and enter then reboot. Chkdsk should start before windows fully loads.

This scan will take a long time as it will check every sector on the drive. When done it will reboot and the log of it will be in the event viewer. Post the results of that log for me

Ok thanks Shane, I've recently (yesterday or the day before) done a chkdsk/r on both my drives (C: the OS, and E: my data, but same HDD) - as these are in dos before Windows boots where will the results of these scans be, in the Event Viewer? I can post these if that's the case, or rescan tomorrow when I next boot up and post the results of a fresh scan, whichever you think best...?

When you get into Event Viewer and it has read the logs, expand Windows Logs, click on Application/Action/Find and enter chkdsk or wininit into the Find box and press enter.

Close the find box and then read the chkdsk report in the scrollable window.

To post the report, click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane - right click in the reply box and select Paste.

I don't know why but that duplicates the report in the reply box, so you could Preview and edit that back to one before hitting the Post button.

Thanks guys, I had a feeling it might be in there somewhere, don't often go in there really. As soon as I can get back into Windows I'll dig it out and post - while downloading updates yesterday it BSOD'd with a 124 error, just started it back up again now and all I have is a black screen and a cursor, Noooooo!

Guess I'll have to go into the RE and do a system restore - that's what I had to do last time this happened, sigh...  will post back when I can get to the event log.....

After you have switched on try tapping the SHIFT key 5 times to see if it will bring up the Sticky key window.

If it does, click on the Go to Ease of Access Center link then type Restore in the top right search box where you will get a number of restore options.

EDIT - Just been Googling the 124 error and it seems to be one of those Windows generic codes.

I think I've read somewhere recently where an update had been responsible for a BSOD - I'll go check the forum I read it on and then get back to you.

Found it - It was June's KB3064209 which is listed as Recommended or Optional and is an update for Intel Processors and reported as preventing a boot up for one Win 7 user.

I installed it expecting it to report as not needed as my laptops use AMD, but it installed and without any incident.

Mine are Toshibas and some Toshibas use Intel processors, so provision for their drivers are included in the install and I have an Intel folder in my registry, which could be why it could have been accepted, but I think as the consensus is that you should only get graphics drivers from your computer support site, this update is best hidden.

Thanks Boggin I tried the sticky key thing but it didn't work, then my machine booted up ok into Windows, so whatever the generic error BSOD was and the black screen/cursor must have been intermittent and righted itself  :artist:. I do have Intel drivers (which I need to check are up to date!), but as I haven't installed any updates yet that KB isn't on my machine yet...

Anyway, here are the Event logs for the chkdsk scans on my 2 drives (same HDD) : weird how copying the log duplicates the text - I've deleted the duplicates!

C: drive has bad sectors bud "4 KB in bad sectors."

Get your data off the drive and backed up as soon as you can and get the drive replaced

You may want to check if it's overheating as well.

The free version of HD Monitor will give you the temps. http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

The freebie download button is to the left and a bit lower down.

Cheers Shane, it's all backed up already as I'm aware of the disk problems - I could hardly not be!  I've had intermittent problems with it ever since I got it over 3 years ago, but as it was cheap and a decent spec machine (at the time) I've put up with it's occasional fall-overs and other issues, mainly updating problems and BSOD's now and again. And the 4kb of bad sectors has been there as well, and not got any worse, so while I know disk problems tend to get worse with time, this one seems to be holding it's own and hasn't got any worse (or better...) since I've had it. Replacing the disk isn't an option right now, unfortunately, but is definitely on my shopping list as a nice to have!

What do you mean by overheating Boggin? I've installed the CPUID on both my machines, and the W8 laptop shows a lot more data than my W7 desktop! And do you mean the CPU or the HDD? I'm not sure what the normal parameters are on either, but for your info the Intel Celeron 450 Core is showing Min 73C Max 83C and the WDC Assembly Min 42C Max 43C. The corresponding temps on my laptop are 39-42C for AMD and 29-31C for the Toshiba Assembly, so in comparison the Dell does look to be running a bit hot, but I've never monitored them before or know what their normal operating ranges are supposed to be......  :undecided:

I've forgotten my train of thought now as to why I asked you to check the temps.

I only have sensors in my Tosh laptops for the GPU and HDD but as long as the HDD is <=50ºC it should be okay.

While CPUs can run much hotter, I can't remember what is classed as a safe working temp, but thought in excess of 70 would be a bit high, so perhaps a blow out with a can of compressed air may help, not forgetting the keyboard as some laptops draw air in through those.

Speedfan I think is mainly for desktops, but you could install it to see if it brings the CPU temp down after a blow out. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Some CPUs have a max temp of 90ºC but the operating temp should be 20 - 30º less than that.

Found these specs which give 60.4ºC so your 73+ is way over what it should be, so you should limit your use until you can get that temp down as prolonged usage in an overheating machine can damage the CPU+. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Celeron/Intel-Celeron%20450%20-%20HH80557RG049512.html

If you are able to replace the drive I would do it, I had a customers machine that even though it had no bad sectors, all the problems it was showing wad drive related. Smart status showed the drive fine, the drive was old and even a fresh reinstall of Windows still had the same problems. I replaced the drive and reinstalled Windows and all the problems went away.

Thats the thing about the drives, the smart status and such can only tell us so much and most of the time they are not correct to start with lol.
