Massive amounts of
« on: April 19, 2015, 07:34:51 am »
I ran Tweaking and came up with a massive amount of "This File Is Corrupt (Bad Digital Signature):" errors (I'm talking 177 pages in Word).

Most of them look like this:
This File Is Corrupt (Bad Digital Signature):
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Anytime-Upgrade-HomePremium-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.0.6000.16386.cat

Based on a prior post, Shane stated if you able to run updates with no issues, these are residual files and he is working on a way to eliminate them.  Should I just save my log as another file and delete these from my log (only) and work on the remainder?

I'm able to run updates just fine.

These see, to be the categories they fall in:

C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Anytime-Upgrade-HomePremium-Package
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-AutomationAPI-Package-MiniLP~31bf3856ad364e35~
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Backup-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.0.6000.16386.cat
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Branding-HomePremium-Client-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.0.6000.16386.cat
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-CaptureWizard-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.0.6000.16386.cat
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB2482017~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~8.0.1.0.cat

Basically, everyone of them are C:\Windows\servicing\Packages errors.
No problems where found with the Reparse Points.
No problems where found with the Environment Variables.

Vista Home Premium but not sure how to tell how many updates pass/fails.  All updates under Windows Updates are completed.

View update history will show the successes and fails but it won't be a complete history.

No issues showing.

Only thing that shows is the two recent successful updates.

Well lets go check if the file has a bad signature or not :-)

A .cat file can have a digital signature on it, so go to

C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\

Then in there right click on any .cat file and then go to properties. When properties open you should see a digital signature tab, if there isnt one then the file has been modified in some way to where it is no longer signed.

So go ahead and check the
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Anytime-Upgrade-HomePremium-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.0.6000.16386.cat

And lets see if it has that tab or not.

OK then it is possible that my program wasnt able to see that, my program calls a Windows API to get the cert data of the file, which uses the "Cryptographic Services" or "CryptSvc" service to do that.

If that service isnt running or is disabled it wouldnt let the API pull the data and so it would think it is bad. If that is the case you can ignore the errors in the pre-scan because basically it wasn't able to pull the data, so it thinks it wasnt there.

Can you check to see if that service is running?

- To see how many updates failed & were succesful: Open the "Control Panel", "Programs & Features", "View Installed Updates". Then at the bottom it tells you the amount of (successful) updates.

- Perhaps one of the Repairs didn't (re-)start that one particular Service ("Cryptsvc") ?

It doesn't give me the amount of successful updates but since 2008 I've had 568 updates.  80 since I started using Tweaking in March, 70 of those since 4/16 when I was able to get a cable issue resolved with my monitor that allowed me to reboot to Safe With Networking and reran Tweaking.  I've included a Snipping Tool file showing for some of them from the Installed Updates screen.

Sorry for the day to day posting but I'm trying to do this as I come home for lunch or after work.

Updates are installing, which tells me that there is something odd that isnt letting the program pull the digital signatures. So in this case I would say you can ignore those errors, since updates are installing, if updates where not installing then I would say the errors where correct.

- Try this: Run the repairs of Windows Repair and make sure you - at least - run repairs #26 & 27 & restart. That should be enough to start the Service "Cryptsvc" upon start up (again). Then try to rerun the "Pre-Scan" again. Perhaps there's a (significant) change in the report ?
- Perhaps you ran Windows Repair and aborted the program somewhere in the middle of a repair ? That also could have caused this "Cryptsvc" problem.
