How long do you let it run?
« on: November 06, 2014, 05:38:36 am »
I have an old pc that has Windows 8 on it. The machine has never been really quick. Since it was having a couple of problems I decide to try running the all in 1 suite on it.

It's now been going for about 3 hours & is still on step 1 which I have been told is the slowest. I still seems to be processing & already lists a few things that it wants to change or already changed. I dont if it makes change as it goes or not.

How long can it take & do I just let it run?

It's still running having gone overnight.  Do I just abort the process?  If I do will any of the changes detected take effect?

When Windows 8 was installed I recall that within the first few days lots of update occurred.  I still get some & they work.  The update to 8.1 doesn't.

Step 1 is still running? Can you post a screen shot of the desktop for me so I can see the program and if the cmd.exe window is running. Also check the task manager and make sure the setacl exe is running.

Sorry for not getting back sooner.  I wanted to send you a screen show as you suggested.  I aligned the window with the task manager window which showed that the  cmd.exe window was running.  I had intended to use the snipping tool to take the picture but found the it appeared to be missing.  The old screen print using print didn't appear.  I don't know if its even supposed to be in Windows anymore.

So I aborted the program & restarted the PC & wold it to rerun all modules.  Its still running but is almost finished.  I can set one thing that its currently repairing & that is the snipping tool.  I will let it finished ,then reboot & see if there are any changes.   I have to go out now so it might be a while.

Once finished the pc was rebooted. I had to request this becuse the program didn't do it even though the box to do so was ticked.  The first thing I looked for the snipping tool & was pleased to see it was restored.

It then did a lot of updates that previously failed, so that to seems to have been fixed.  I will look later to see if it also moved to version 8.1 or not.

I'll let you know. Thanks again as things certainly been improved.

Even thought I had some improvement by running the all in 1 & had the program do many updates it had previously downloaded & had reversed before.  It still didn't change to 8.1.

From what I read almost everyone hates Windows 8 & 8.1 so maybe I'm better off without it.  Microsoft goes from one horror to another.  I see that Microsoft has already withdrawn from sale almost all versions of 7 & 8 & intends to jump to version 10.

I bought Windows 95 when it first came out but as everyone knows if didn't do what it claimed.  The you bought & paid for Windows 98, with exactly the same results. I have also been through the same thing other version like XP ,7 & some other versions.

If anyone intends to use Windows 10, Microsoft should be paying you for all of the wasted time & money it cost.  Instead of purchasing it we should be suing them for false advertising.

These big software have bugs in them & continue to do so.  Another example is iTunes  which for years has had a duplicate track finder that is wrong. You can have the same song title by the same artist on different albums, with different arrangements & could have been recorded 30 years apart ,where the length of the one version can to double that of the other one yet they call them duplicates.

Windows 10 is due out next fall, so i will still be a while.

With the problem you are having, there is a faster way to go about it. You need to get a hold of the Windows 8.1 install disk, which there is a way to download the ISO for it, then just do a repair install following this guide
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

That will not only repair the system and keep your programs but it will also get you up to 8.1

Here is one way to get the ISO and make a cd with it
