Windows update failure code:80070663
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:36:35 pm »
HI... I tried using your Windows repair v2.9.2 and went through the whole process...  (nice collection of tools by the way...), but I'm still having problems with my windows update ...  haven't had a successful one for over a year...   The original code was 80070057.  After running everything and fixing some errors, the code is now 80070663...  But Update still doesn't run...

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks

What version of Windows and what service pack? Is it all updates or only certain ones that give the error?

Ok I looked up the error message and looks like it has something to do with this registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage

Do me a fav and open regedit and go to that key, the right click on it and export it and then post it here. I will then compare it with a windows 7 system I have and see if you are missing anything

Thanks Shane,

I did as you asked...  Codepage also had a subfolder... I've added that one as well...

Thanks again...

David

Thanks, all those match up. I checked and looks like there are a number of things that can cause the error. One of the steps to try is to install the system readiness tool.

You didnt say if you where on 64 or 32 bit so here is a link to both
64
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

32
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

Install that and reboot and see if it helps :-)

Interesting....!

This is a 64bit system - so I downloaded and installed the hotfix....   and it certainly did something....

After it was installed, I was able to instal all the outstanding optional updates (Nvidia, Logitech and windows)... but it still won't install any of the important ones...   And it still provides the same error 80070663

Really appreciate your help here....  any other ideas?

Many thanks,

David

Can you list the KBs you are getting this error for ?

In Control Panel/System and Security/Find and fix problems there is a trouble shooter link for WU problems with a separate, but not sure if different diagnostics, when you click on View all in the upper left pane - what do they report ?

It could also be worth running a sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

The Permissions issue could still be lurking in the background to prevent the other WUs - give these steps a try and then check for WUs again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968003

I really want to thank Shane and Boggin for their interest and help here....  And have to report that everything is now working!!
I didn't get a chance to try any of Boggins suggestions....  I guess the hot fix had some delayed features, because yesterday as I shut the system down it did an automatic update and loaded and ran the 14 outstanding updates that I had!!

I wish I knew why...  but I'll accept the fact that its working...

Thanks again guys...  you are lifesavers!!

Ciao,

David

It may have taken the shutdown to effect the hotfix - but whatever - it's working

Good to hear you are working. Sounds like the system readiness tool did the trick but you just had to get an extra reboot in there for it to finish all the way lol
