Wireless Network cannot get ip address at boot-up
« on: October 14, 2013, 09:02:02 am »
Under Windows XP sp3, for reasons which I cannot explain, this problem began a couple of days ago.
I can get it to connect by doing a power reset of the WRT54G v5 router and then quickly doing a repair of the wireless connection before the router finishes booting up. This usually results in a connection.
Also, now, my wireless mouse doesn't work till I get it connected????
I ran the  Tweaking.com All In One repair item #12 "Repair Winsock and DNS Cache, but, that didn't fix it.
Can anyone suggest further steps to repair this?
Thanks,
Chuck

The first step is to find out if the problem is in the wireless card in the system or something with the router.

The easiest way to do that is to have your system connect to a different wireless and see if it still has the problem.

If it works fine on another wireless network then we know it is something with the router. If it has problems on other wireless networks then we know the problem is either the wireless card, drivers, or something in Windows.

I have another WRT54G router which I tried and got exactly the same result.
Is that what you mean?
Also just a reminder that my other computers connect fine.

I just had an epiphany!
When I use the Windows Zero Configuration Utility. the wireless connects immediately.
The problem has something to do with the Linksys Wireless Network Monitor.
I tried the latest driver but it did the same thing.

Ah looks like you found the problem :-)

I always use the Windows wireless manager and never the 3rd party software. It is nothing more than another program running taking resources.

If the Windows one works I say stick with it
