You get that screen anytime you click Windows Update no matter which updates are up there.....Important or Optional......however some updates do get installed automatically and I can get the KB number and go to windows and find it and download.
Attached is one that is there now and will not download.....

MS has a list with WU error codes.

This is the %systemroot%\windowsupdate.log with all the recent errors if that helps.....by the way thanks for spending as much time as you have on this it is much appreciated.

MS has nothing on that error number and doing some google searches seems like it is a problem in Vista, and from what I can tell might have to do with certain regkeys on the system.

When you did the repair install did you do it like this?

No the only Windows DVD came with the computer and is also intalled on drive D:......I did the repair from the D: drive.
I don't think it would be worth buying a new one.....I would be better off reformatting and doing a complete reinstall......I can live with manually updating if need be for now.

Thanks for the link.....when I get some time I will attempt to follow the instructions.....with the exception of the Windows Update problem I am not running too bad......maybe a little slower but this machine is about 5 years old.
