XP Media Centre Edition Freezes on Boot
« on: August 29, 2013, 11:35:20 am »
Hi  -
wonder if someone can help me.

Elonex Exentia all in one PC running Windows XP Media Centre edition 2005 SP3, 2 gig Ram.
The original installation disks are not available.  So I was quite interested when I found this site and the utilities.

The main problem is that the PC only runs in Safe Mode.
When it is started normally it freezes.  It gets to the Windows XP splash screen and the progress bar goes across several times and then stops.

I understand that there was a virus on the system recently but it has been cleaned.
I have run many and various AVs on the system to make sure that it has all gone, including Malwarebytes, Norton, and Kaspersky Rescue Disk.  These have found nothing.

I have tried a clean boot and reduced the start programs to nothing.

Still it will not boot normally.

I have attached the log files from your all in one tool.  Is there anything I can do or something I have missed?

I have also explained to the owner of the PC the situation regarding XP and discussed the options but for now they would like the PC working as is, if possible.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is also possible it is a driver problem as well.  When in safe mode only the bare minimum of drivers are loaded.

When starting normally and you see the progress bar, that is drivers loading up, it hasn't even got tot he point of loading programs yet.

SO it is possible it is bad hardware or just corrupt drivers.

When in safe mode, have you checked the event viewer to see if you can find anything around the time when it freezes?

Thanks for taking the time to review the logs and for the reply.

In an attempt to see what was loading behind the splash screen I tried a normal boot using the /SOS switch on the Boot.ini.

This did not give me much detail however, it did boot fully into windows without freezing.

The event log had one 7026 error relating to Drivers BHDrvx86 and SYMTDI.  These are related to Norton IS, which is installed.

I ran the All in one tool again and rebooted. Still as a diagnostic boot.

Norton reported that it was not correctly installed and proceeded to uninstall and reinstall itself.

After this I removed the /SOS switch and tried a normal startup.

It booted normally with no errors in the event log.

It would appear that the freezing issue was related to Norton IS.

Thanks again.

SO it was a norton driver issue.

Glad you found it :-) That was one of many reasons why I stopped using norton a long time ago lol
