Lines down screen

A  couple of months ago the laptop developed a line down the screen, now another one has appeared.

Is there anyway i can repair this myself or cheaply?

The computer is old.

That is normally hardware related. Either the video card or the screen it self.

There are some so called self fixes. But normally there isnt anything you can do since it is hardware and not a software problem.

No way to tell at all. A lot of times more lines will appear as time goes on. Might get worse might stay the same.

Does having a separate screen running from the laptop (low resources) take up any more resources?

The reason being do i buy another computer or just run the as above.
