Restore Points
« on: April 29, 2013, 09:25:17 pm »
This seems a nice tool but I cannot create restore points lately and this didnt solve the problem.
Before using your tool, I tried many different ideas from Microsoft and others but nothing works.
Any ideas?

Thanks for writing Shane.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32  bit

I have a lot of problems with my Lenovo R61i PC

1) The Restore Points
2) Bluetooth has stopped working.  I reinstalled and nothing.
The Bluetooth Support Service (in services) is disabled and it
is impossible to restart it
3) Devices and Printers in Control Manager doesnt open any more.

In short - trouble.

If you have any ideas - I would be grateful.
I dont really want to format the whole system.

Oh help, please !

I can no longer create Restore Points, nor does System Restore automatically create them.  Get "catastrophic error" -- yet task scheduler shows they are created.

My system:  Vista Home Premium x64.  Only using Microsoft Security Essentials for AV and Windows Firewall.

Any ideas ?  I don't relish having to do a system recovery.  Thanks.

The best and fastest thing to do will be a repair install. This way Windows gets reinstall without losing your programs and files :-)

First you will need a Win 7 cd with SP1 which you can grab the image here
https://sites.google.com/site/linuxlablibrary/windows-iso

Then just follow this guide

Hello Shane - thank you but..........
yesterday I completely formatted my PC.
All is fine other than restore points which
for some reason cannot be created.
Have you any idea or is my computer
damaged?
Regards
Helen

Thats very odd for it not to work after a fresh install.

Give me some more information,

How did you do the reinstall? Did you just install over the current one or did you have the Windows setup format the drive first?
After you installed Windows what programs did you install?

Reason why on the software is some backup programs install vss writers that will cause vss not to work and system restore uses vss.

Thank you Shane.

I worked according to the instructions on my Windows 7 installation disc.

I also installed the usual programs:

Micrsoft word
CC Cleaner
Tuneup
Malwarebytes
Skype
and other stuff that I had before the problem

I do go to services and restart the VSS as it seems to disappear from time to time

The trick is to try the system restore before you start installing programs.

It is possible one of the programs you installed is breaking it. Some backup software can break system restore as well as it installs its own vss writer and breaks vss.

Thank you Shane
Yesterday, I formatted the computer once again and I tried to restore before installing
programs but no luck.  I am frustrated: 2 complete formats in less than a week with
no signifiicant change.
Today, I tried to back up the PC on a disc and that didnt work as well.

Only thing I can think of that would cause that is if there are bad sectors on the drive.

Have you done a bad sector check on the drive yet? It normally takes a couple of hours to run.
