new server set up
« on: April 15, 2013, 05:03:13 pm »
Hi Shane
I have bought an empty server from a friend its Quad-core intel processor ,10GB RAM, 2 500GB HDDs. I wanna set it up for practice at home, but don't know where to start with.
first, I have one windows laptop with upgraded to 12GB RAM, I5 CPU, which I would like to use as monitor/control for the server ( as someone told me that I can use KVM port via cat 6/5e to do so). can I do that straight away or I have to conect separate monitor KB for once?
Second, where I would get windows OS to install server (something like esxi not sure).
after that I gonna set up few Virtual machines which in turn I would use as my virtual network. :undecided:
A word of advise and help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Vik
PS:- The server is Del Power-Edge 2950

If your installing Windows server you can just use remote desktop to log into it from your laptop :-)

Also Windows server isnt free, so you will have to get  your hands on one from somewhere for that. You could also go the free Linux route like Ubuntu, they make great servers.

Thanks Shane, you always rock. :cheesy:
I Gonna install the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ( As I think I'm Pretty familiar with Ubuntu for fair bit of time) and VMWare on top of that to build up my virtual network.
how that sounds?
cheers

VMware does work with it :-) And with Ubuntu you can find almost any tool you need for free. The only reason I havent set my customers up on Ubuntu servers yet is because I havent taken the time to get the file and print sharing working with it and printers with windows workstations.

But I also have users who hate change.
