Execute Processess Remotely crashes during Windows Repair
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:32:59 pm »
Shane,

Trying to run Windows Repair 1.9.0.12 from tweaking.com folder on the desktop and running into this error. Sounds the same as in http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,119.0.html, but I don't have the extraordinary circumstances that the other poster had. What I do have is I'm trying to recover from an unknown virus and/or trojan infection and have no internet connectivity. Any suggested workarounds?

Thanks,
Dave

The program trys to run some of the repairs under the system account, this way it has permissions that not even administrator gets. But for some reason something is badly broken on your system.

I use psexec.exe to run the bat files under the system account. But psexec.exe doesnt work in safe mode. So if you run the repairs in safe mode the program wont try to run them under the system account

Worse comes to worse I can give you what you need to do a repair install if my tool doesnt fix you. This way you can keep your programs and files while windows gets reinstalled :-)

Any way I can manually apply the changes?

Dave

Shane,

I ran it under safe mode. It was hard to tell exactly what was working and what was not. Of course, I didn't see any of the Execute Processes Remotely errors. Bottom line is I still have no network connectivity, though.

Looks like you have the framework of a handy tool for a lot of situations and you're growing it into a more useful tool. I've bookmarked it for something to look at when I need help again.

Thanks,
Dave

The fact that the running as system was crashing tells me there is more problems deep in the system than just the network.

What version of Windows?

If you have a XP cd with SP3 already on it you could do a repair install :-)

I'm about ready to admit defeat and try that. It was installed as SP1 then upgraded. I'll look to see if I can find an SP3 CD.

Best I can tell, it's mainly a DNS problem. I can put in google's IP address and the page will load. But as you've seen, there are other more subtle problems. The desktop will sort it's icons every time I'm not looking.

Thanks for your help,
Dave

When ever I see a system when I am working on a customers machine that has a lot of deep and odd errors It is usually a huge time saver to try a repair install or a fresh install.

With Windows having over 1 million reg keys it can become a huge time waster trying to find the fix. This is one of the reasons my repair tool will never be perfect. I will keep adding more repairs and more reg keys. But only reg keys that are the same on every system. There are some regkeys that are specific to the machine it self, like drivers and hardware. So when those get messed up the only option is a reinstall.

I'm going with the fresh install because my XP CD is only SP1, plus the drive has some bad blocks on it, so I'm swapping it out for a better one. At some point, I agree that it does get easier to just admit defeat and wipe the system. At least then you know whatever was there is gone for sure. It belongs to a friend so he's the one that will have to reload his apps, too.

Thanks,
Dave
