Author Topic: Windows 10 and msconfig (Read 26287 times)

I have just updated my PC to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and everything is going fine so far, except..... I did a clean boot on the machine before installing the update. I have found that now, I am unable to permanently change the msconfig start up option to normal. I can set it to normal and reboot, but it reverts back to selective startup after the reboot. I was going to check the "make all boot settings permanent" box, but I was warned that this could not be undone or reversed! So I'm at my wits' end as to how to set a default, etc. for the boot. Any suggestions? And thank you!

I typed msconfig from the Start button not knowing at the time that Safe Mode could be accessed through Recovery.

I set msconfig to use Safe Mode with Networking and while it booted up into Safe Mode, I didn't get the networking bit to go with it.

Unfortunately when I typed msconfig again to revert to a normal boot, nothing appeared in the Start up menu - so it was stuck in that mode.

My only solution was to revert back to Win 7, but because of other problems I experienced and Win 10's intrusive nature I've decided to stay with Win 7.

msconfig will still show selective startup if you have any services disabled by it and such.

Did you go to the other tabs and reenable the disabled items?

Only thing I can think of is that msconfig didnt have the right permissions to change anything, go to msconfig and right click on it and choose run as administrator and see if that does the trick.

Is it booting into safe mode? Or is it booting into normal mode but just all the startup items are disabled?

If I set it to normal through msconfig and reboot when it asks me to, it will reboot normally; however, it reverts back to selective startup as a "default" after the reboot. I haven't booted into safe mode since the Win 10 upgrade...

Ok so you are not booting in to safe mode, good

So besides it showing selective startup, is anything not working or loading? Or is everything working fine?

I think so, but I'm not sure! It seems that my machine rebooted last night...update? and everything seems to have loaded except google drive so far, but I can manually load that. But the first day or so that I was on Windows 10, the start menu was not working. So I rebooted and got this CRITICAL ERROR, START MENU AND CORTANA DID NOT LOAD. WE WILL TRY TO FIX IT ON NEXT LOG IN. But I couldn't get anywhere with that! It wouldn't load, each time I'd try to log in, it would give me the same message so I was in a loop. Finally I did a control/alt/delete and opened the task manager. Nothing was running so I started a new task and ran misconfig. I set it to normal, rebooted, and everything has seemed OK since. But it is still defaulting to selective startup in misconfig. Will I not be able to boot into safe mode??

Well that is a first lol

I havent seen a problem where msconfig keeps reverting back, unless something keeps changing it or it doesnt have permissions to write to the registry.

Well i did just put out v3.4.2 which I redid how the permissions are done.

Give it a try, just make sure to do a registry backup with it first, just in case. Then see if that helps at all

I had this problem in Windows 7 once and it was caused by uninstalling or installing something while in selective (or diagnostic) mode.
The system was unable to put it back to "normal" mode because it couldn't reconcile the way it was originally
(because of a conflict) to the way it became after the system changes mentioned above.

There is a registry key that can be cleaned that resolves this problem, but I am unable to find it at the moment.

It's possible that you may have to revert to Win 7 and redo the upgrade so as to start afresh.

Open MSCONFIG and find out what service(s) is de-selected.
Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig in REGEDIT,
and look at the keys under it. Look at the values on the right side. See if you can find a match.
