.dll problems (solved)
« on: May 27, 2015, 09:26:12 pm »
Steam throws up a 'steamui.dll not found' error when it tries tostart. Attempted all the usual fixes but none worked.

Went to try SFC but thatrefused to start, at which point I attempted a system restore to the last time it worked (11pm, 24th May) which promptly failed.

Having exausted all the google suggestions to try and fix SFC and System Restore (which, unhelpfully, involve each other working...), I tried the Windows Repair tool, which has given me this log on the pre-scan:

Quote
These Files Are Missing: (Total: 8)

These Files Are Possibly Corrupt (Bad Digital Signature): (Total: 2)
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Package_122_for_KB2984972~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.4.mum

As they all have 'amd' mentioned this may have something to do with the AMD control suddenly deciding to stop working then switch to german on me when I fixed it a few months back. No idea if thisis actually related though.

OS: Windows 7 professional 6.1.7601 SP1 x64

sfc /scannow relies upon the Windows Module Installer service starting which is found when you press the Windows key, type services.msc - press enter then scroll down to the service.

This is default set to Manual and sfc should fire it up, but you can manually start it by clicking on it and then on Start in the upper left pane.

Have you tried a chkdsk without any parameters to see what that reports ?

There are a couple of ways you could try the restore points and they are when you boot up into the Advanced Boot options by tapping F8 (usually) as you switch on and select Safe Mode to try them, as it could be your AV program that is blocking it.

The other is to select Repair your Computer in the Advanced Boot options, navigate to the Recovery Environment then select the Restore option.

Using the Startup Repair option also gives you a Restore option as it works its way through before going onto the full Startup repair.

If the restore is successful and then sfc, run Windows Repair again to see if it produces the same Package errors.

Already tried this. Didn't work.

chkdsk runs fine, but doesn't fix the problem.

None ofthe restores I ran, in safe mode or no, were able to complete.

What did chkdsk report ?

EDIT - Can you also try Last Known Good Configuration to see if that will restore.

chkdsk without any parameters is a read only mode and will not repair but will report or advise what next to run if any errors are found.

Those errors in the pre-scan wont keep the repairs from working, just make sure to run all the repairs and run them in safe mode, of course have it do a registry backup first just in case

Ran repairs in safe mode, didn't fix the issue. Thankfully it didn't cause any either.
Running a chkdsk now, will have the logs of the repairs up soonTM.

I am seeing a lot of odd file not found errors for things that should be on every system.

Like repairing your hosts file
Quote
File not found - C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
The system cannot find the file specified.

And
Quote
Reset of all TCP parameters FAILED: Unable to set global on ipv4.
The system cannot find the file specified.

The following command was not found: int teredo reset all.

Windows IP Configuration

Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution.

Windows IP Configuration

Registration of DNS records failed: The RPC server is unavailable.

Can you get the chkdsk log that was ran at bootup from the event viewer so I can see what it says?

144 KB in bad sectors.

You have bad sectors, your drive is bad and the files are getting corrupt. It is time to replace the drive, get your stuff backed up to another drive as soon as you can

You should be able to get a RMA on the HDD as it will still be under warranty but I agree, you wouldn't expect a HDD to fail that soon.

Hi, Along with other ideas, i would advise you to copy everything you want and then clean the hard disk by hard disk manufacturer's diagnosis tool, like seagate tools for dos and windows. If you could clean the dbas of hard disk, then there is a chance that your hard disk may be recovered. Hard disc does not fail that much earlier unless some outer power surge fires the hdd.
                                              Then copy the contents.
bad sectors of 144 kb in different dbas of hdd would create a lot of problems.
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

It could be due to an overheating problem I suppose - can you check the temp it is running at - either in the BIOS or with HD Monitor.

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html - download link in the left pane below the blue 4 Steps etc.

Okay, it's definitely dying on me and needs to be replaced.

It's a 1TB WB Green. (WD10EZRX)

Any suggestions for a good replacement or should I just get another one and hope it doesn't die?

Hi, Pips,
i do not think that your hdd is dead. Not at all. What you have to do is copy all the files other than system files. There are diagnostics tool of the respected manufacturer. For you , I think that your manufacturer has tools to test . Just download and run to find . There are tools if you want to completelely ged rid of bad sectors.  The link for running windows is here
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=3&lang=en
the guide is here
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/hardware-testing-software/fl/western-digital-data-lifeguard-diagnostic.htm
I think that your hdd would get repaired. If it is not booting, then you could try this link
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=2&lang=en
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

What is the error . Please enclose. You could also download seagate tools for dos and do the check. The dos tool could be done only on boot.
What is failed? Test failed or the program did not work.
Normally bad sectors could be rapaired by diagnostic tool. WD hard disk, naturally last more years.
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

When an 8 month old HDD starts developing bad sectors then it's time to start backing up and arrange for a RMA to get a replacement.

Have you been able to check the temps ?

Hi, If it is replacement with warranty, it is ofcourse, the best to do.
I also bought one and it got damaged due to external power outage, and i could not reclaim the hdd. If you could get back a new one as replacement. Good to go

The hard drive is bad, needs replaced. You will notice the WD greens and such are their cheap models and only have 2 year warranties.

In all the systems I build I use the western digital enterprise edition drives, while they can go bad like anything else, they do come with a 5 year warranty instead :-)

This is the 500 GB model I use, I normally buy 2 and set them up in raid 1 (mirroring) :-)

Got a replacement on warranty. It's working fine.

For anyone else who is getting the same problem:
Corrupted drive causing problems with DirectX .dlls
Solution is to check the drive using manufacturer's tools and repair/replace
