Update Codes :: 8000FFFF & Others
« on: September 05, 2013, 05:12:51 am »
Hi

Like a madman, i have offered to help a friend fix his computer... I have removed untold viruses and other toolbars etc with CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and ran the Tweaking program along with other Fix-Its etc

The system is running Windows 7 64bit iCore 3 and is on a Samsung RV520 Laptop

The important updates its trying to install are:

Security for IE8
Security for Windows 7 x64
Update for IE8
And install IE9

Error codes are 8000FFF & Code 5

I have tried to bypass the IE install by removing from installed programs the IE and installing 10, without success it just crashes.

I cannot install MSE either (only AVAST will install) - no other Antivirus is installed)

I cant run the troubleshooter within windows either.

I assume there is something missing in the system somewhere, but this has stumped me big time.!

Any help/guidance would be VERY helpful

Thanks

Lets make sure those viruses didnt add any symbolic links on the system which would kill a lot of things. Run this
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/ntfs_links_view.html

And save the log and post it and Iw ill see if I see anything other than the defaults that should be on the system.

Symbolic links look fine.

I see from that screen shot that is says system files are missing or corrupt, have you ran sfc (system file checker) yet?

Looks like a repair install is the best option, it isnt a fresh install, just a repair, so all your files and settings stay.

First you need a Windows 7 disk that has SP1, you can grab it here

The follow this

Let me know how it goes :-)

Glad you got it going :-)

When the SFC fails there isnt a lot you can do as a repair install is the only way I have found to fix the SFC.

File as requested

No, the symbolic links weren't OK because 3 links pointed to a parent of the link:

"C:\ProgramData\Application Data" pointed to "C:\ProgramData"
"C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data"pointed to "C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local"
"C:\Users\Millsie\AppData\Local\Application Data" pointed to "C:\Users\Millsie\AppData\Local"

I thought this kind of recursive symbolic links were being eliminated in WR version v1.9.16 ?

No, those are correct :-)
