Repair reboot crashed my computer
« on: December 11, 2020, 10:56:09 am »
I was having trouble using a USB Mouse, and found a recommandation of Tweakings repair tool.

Installed it, and went on to reboot - and now my computer is not able to start up. At all!

It keeps saying "PC didn't start correct" on a pretty blue screen inviting me to restart or go to advanced settings.

Restarting just keeps me in a loop.

Advanced settings offers me the choice of resetting the pc. But that doesn't work either (typing in 2  extremely long Microsoft Keys) - nothing seem to happen.

I had a perfectly usable PC earlier today. Just wanted to use my Mouse instead of only touchpad. Now I have no PC!!

I'm on Win 10, on a Lenovo Yoga.
Running sfc /scannow in command prompt gives the message "... could not perform requested operation"!

I don't know why that happened but if you have access to another machine, you can create and boot up with a Hiren's Boot Disk.

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6966-hirens-bootcd.htmln

If you need to create a bootable USB, this article explains that - https://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk

Use the 15.2 download, but if that doesn't get you back up then try the PE 1.0.1.

I've used 15.2 to get my Win 10 back up but it was on an earlier version than 20H2.

If either gets you back up then I would advise performing a chkdsk /r

You can read the log in Event Viewer.

When it has read the data, expand Windows Logs - click on Application/Action/Find and type chkdsk into the Find box and press Enter.

Cancel the Find box and read the log in the scrollable pane below.

Primarily you are looking to see if it reports any KBs in bad sectors.

If it does then it's advisable to immediately create a system image onto external media in preparation for complete HDD failure.

If the HDD is okay then enter these cmds to see what they report.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Enter exit to close the Command Prompt/Powershell window

Hi Tom

Yeah, well, I finally managed to make a complete reinstall of Windows through USB and my work PC.
Now I can start from scratch creating my personal PC.

You might want to update your answer - I'm assuming it's a standard copy-paste. The first guide link is dead.

The second might be usable for some, but step 1 wasn't possible - and I have no boot CD to copy. Windows own guide made it for me, though.

You can mark this as solved - or close it, or whatever.

That's strange about the link being dead as it was for me.

I've just Googled for hiren's boot disk and clicked on the same TechSpot link of which I have copied & pasted and I got the download page.

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6966-hirens-bootcd.html

You may want to create the Hiren's disk as it can be useful.

The reason I added the link to convert to USB from the ISO is because modern laptops may not have a DVD drive.

Sorry about that second link as it didn't do what I thought  it was supposed to do.

It's a pity you didn't get back to me before doing the clean install - I could have saved you some work.

Have you performed a chkdsk /r and another sfc /scannow to see what they report.
