Windows Repair Stuck on Repair Job 8
« on: January 31, 2018, 07:58:26 am »
Hi!

I am trying to repair Windows 10 Pro using your Windows Repair 2018 (v4.0.13) (Free Version).

In Safe Mode.

It completed the first 7 of 43 Repairs Jobs in just under an hour, then began Repair "08 - Repair MDAC/MS Jet" over 14 hours ago.

I don't know how to do a screenshot while it is running, but the System Monitor reads (Process Count: 64); Drive Read has been stuck at 0 Bytes/s since I got to my desk this morning; Drive Write is bouncing from 0 to 45 or so Bytes/s; Memory Used: 1.62 GB; CPU Usage is bouncing between 0.3% and 6%, mostly hovering between 0.7% and 1.2%.

Is this normal?

This has been reported by others as well recently, but stop the program then open a Command Prompt (Admin) and perform a chkdsk /r and then a sfc /scannow

Let us know if the sfc /scannow reports corruption it is unable to repair, else enter these cmds and then run the program again after the reboot

winmgmt /standalonehost

winmgmt /resetrepository

shutdown /r /t 00

These cmds have been known to resolve that repair hang.

I saw that in another post, but it wasn't about Windows Repair so I thought it would be best to ask.

I will give it a go and let you know what happens. Thanks!

All steps completed, no damage to drive that couldn't be repaired. In Safe Mode and rerunning program now, but have a question:

The first screen says "Please wait. Checking that all needed files are in the program folder and haven't been corrupted..." followed by "Done!"

And then (File Progress - Checking MD$ Hash) and Files: 469/469.

Everything is still. Is anything happening? Should I just keep waiting?

I get that on one of my laptops and I have to physically close that window via the red X and as soon as I do, the program progresses as normal.

I don't know why that happens and I just treat it as a minor annoyance.

Oh, Bother!  That is annoying.  Thanks. Scanning now.

It's 3:30 PM here in Fort Worth, Texas. What time is it where you are?

No, Shane Croft is the author of all of the programs on this website.

I'm just a volunteer helper who has been elevated to Moderator status to help Shane out.

As well as continuing to try and make the repair program better, or to keep it abreast of the changes made to Win 10, he also has a computer repair business and lives somewhere in Ohio.

I'll be around for another couple of hours tonight before I shoot off to roost.

Interesting!  Where is the 3rd guy listed?

I am back to Repair Job 8 of 45. This is where I got bogged down yesterday. It spent something like 14 hours on Job 8.

It started at 4:09:13 PM, so it has been running for 15 minutes now. How long should it take?

Julian ? - I think he has work commitments and he just looks in occasionally.

I'm not sure how long Repair 08 should run on Win 10 - I've just run 4.0.13 on my Win 7 laptop and it seemed to get finished pretty quickly, although I didn't time it while I'm on one of my Win 10 laptops.

See how it goes.

Opps! I hit the wrong button and logged myself out before I sent my last response. Took me a minute to figure out that I needed to Login again.

Repair 8 is now at 40 minutes and the Read has been at 0 for most or maybe all of that time; Write is stumbling along but I just saw a whopping 60+ KB pop up, CPU Usage if between .33% and 1%.

Oddly, the Process Count this go around is 42. Yesterday it was 73.

and the Memory Used  is now 1.15 GB. Yesterday it was 1.6 GB.

Would the size of my Hard Drive be of any issue?  It is a Terabyte, the same size as my internal storage drive.

I'm looking up how to manually repair MDAC.

Man, I do NOT want to have to start from scratch with all these programs.

I'm not sure if the size of the HDD is relevant but I believe Office uses MDAC and I once read that repairing that had repaired MDAC.

You can do that by right clicking on it in Programs and Features and selecting Repair if you have Office installed.

A quick way to get there is to press the Windows key, type appwiz.cpl and press enter.

I don't know what other programs use MDAC.

If it goes on for hours again, I'll report it to my Support to see if there's an answer or reason for it.

Get a Load of the attached that I found on one of the Forums. Maybe your program is trying to repair MDAC when it is present in Windows 10, but not installed.

I'll stop everything again and try your Office Repair Idea.

Wish there was a Repair option for Windows.

Well I've run 4.0.12 on my Win 10 laptops and it completed as normal - I haven't tried 4.0.13 on those yet.

I don't have any MS programs installed except Word Viewer.

There is a repair for Win 10 and I do it when I feel mine isn't performing as well as it should or something has gone awry.

It's called a Repair Install and doesn't affect your personal stuff or installed programs, but you need Win 10 install media to perform it which you can get by using the Download tool now button at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 but read the instructions first as the procedure differs for a DVD and an USB.

If using a DVD then select Save for the ISO file download - it usually puts it into my Docs folder.

You will also need a burner to create the bootable disk - I use Windows USB/DVD tool. - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56485

To perform a repair install, open Windows Explorer - This PC - insert the install media and double click on its drive.

This should start the process if using a DVD but if using an USB, that will open to its files where you would then double click on setup or setup.exe Application.

I think it can take about 3hrs.

I have known it to remove the IE icon from my taskbar and revert the default browser back to Edge, but pressing the Windows key+r and typing iexplore.exe and pressing enter will open IE and then you can pin its icon back onto the taskbar.

It's best to check the default apps to see if it has reverted anything else - I use Windows Media Player and Adobe Reader - have to set those as default.

Thanks!

I repaired Office, like you suggested, and will give your program a 3rd Go at it, but I am going to download v.12 and try it instead of v.13.

Maybe Shane missed the MDAC thing in his v.13 build.

[Trying to sound like I actually know what I'm talking about: How'd I do?]

As odd as it might sound, after my chkdsk, et sec, that you recommended earlier today, everything appeared to be back to running fine.

I just thought I should run your program again to polish thing up, but then ran into the same Hang Up at 8, thus my request for assistance.

Let you know what happens with the v.12 scan.

Tried a few "Searches" for v.12 and every website I was referred to only took me to v. 13

Do you not have previous versions available?

People were complaining about the same hang on Repair 08 on 4.0.12 so perhaps that may not be the best one to try.

You can get earlier versions from this website and more when you click on View more in the right pane - https://filehippo.com/download_tweaking-com-windows-repair/

As the machine appears to be okay then I'd create a system image before running any earlier versions of the program.

I always create a system image anyway before running the program rather than trusting to the registry back up the program creates prior to its repairs running.

I'll pass this on about the continued hang.
