Thanks for the information. Seems to be very relevant and tried to do what was indicated but afterwards the system reported Bootmgr missing. I restored from image backup but unfortunately the backup contains the same misconfiguration of the boot manager. Sick of this now and have no more ideas. Thanks for all your help, greatly appreciated!

Hi Shane.  Yes there is no difference and no default OS listed in either EasyBCD or Windows dropdown menu [screenshot].

Update! Used "bootrec /rebuildbcd" successfully but the msconfig boot window is still frozen.

Screenshot doesn't show anything useful but all the buttons in this tab are locked.

In the System Configuration Utility the buttons in the Boot tab window are locked. All the other tabs are fine. I have run a system file check and  check disk  but the problem remains. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
