Dear Tom,

Sorry for the long delay. I am dithering about fixing what is not broke and puzzling over another Registry back up software which works(?).

The issue is that scannow shows errors  - but not sure how fatal these errors are.

Tom

I am very wary of installing on top of existing operating system.

1) Have you done this?
2) Were there any issues?
3) Does it save all my software preferences?

Many thanks for all your help!

Hugh

This is a complete re-install?

sfc /scannow is still unhappy!

1) I downloaded regback.exe - a free software. This appeared to operate in normal and safe mode. This backed up Registry including troublesome ntusers.bak

2) Tweaking only operates in normal and NOT in safe mode. This backed up Registry excluding troublesome ntusers.dat

sfc /scannow is still unhappy!

Is the free software then incorrect???

Sorry to say that both discs had same error "... incompatible version..."

The issue is that the computer worked and "tweaking" Registry back up worked. No hardware changes - only new software. Then "tweaking" Registry back up stopped.

Looking at internet such as:

is this helpful as well above my pay grade? Seems to be for those who have non standard installations?

Yes - tried the bought disk as well as your two discs.

Seems strange as I installed from the bought disc!

It did not hang up on the logo but went to dialog box so I could set UK time and currency but US keyboard.

Only on the Repair it was rejected.

I still have to try " To do this, press the Windows key and r together then type Slui 3 into the Run box and press enter." but will tomorrow.

Trying to repair a "working but with Registry issues" computer and also find time to "work"

Thanks again

Hugh

Many thanks again!

The HP Presario Computer came with Windows 10 and a normal hard disk.

Before using I changed the Hard disk to a blank solid state device and clean installed Window 7 pro, (bought new licence).

If I query for the Key then the computer shows a Windows 10 and Windows 7 licence.

Hope this helps?

Hugh

PS - Added thought!  The Tweaking used to back up the Registry without any issue - so having two licences cannot be the issue

Hi,

I must have interrupted by pressing a key as I use a monitor for my laptop.

Repeated - see photo - and seems OK?

Hugh

PS thanks for all the help and looking forward to get disks!

Tom,

Ran Chkdsk /f  which could not run until a restart.

Did a restart and nothing noticed different.  Does it create a log somewhere?

Just to update you.

The page https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03736054  is partly correct.

By putting in CD and pressing escape was able to bet to boot settings.

My computer was on legacy mode, (Win7), and already set to boot from CD, usb etc etc. Disabling Legacy as well meant that when it booted from CD.

Then I could select Repair but it could not repair which makes me think it was repairing not from the CD but the software in the computer.

it just stopped at Windows logo for 30 mins and hung up.

I am a bit frustrated.

Spent two hours and about 50 restarts without success!

Tried to follow your procedures with Installation CD in tray before turn on and not.

If Installation CD in tray before turn on - it just boots and f12 or f8 do not stop the boot

If Installation CD NOT in tray before turn on -  f12 or f8  stop the boot.

F8 brings up the repair inverse screen but pressing enter does not repair as "error" then says put in  Installation CD in tray and reboot.

Reboot with Installation CD in tray before turn on - it just boots  very slowly and f12 or f8 do not stop the boot.

scannow issue not fixed

so 2 hrs later still the same - any ideas?

Hugh
