General Computer Support / Re: Reinstalling Virtual PC and Virtual XP
« on: April 22, 2017, 03:04:16 pm »
I used System Repair to get out of Safe Mode.  Then I restored the registry backup from the Tweaking program.  Then I reinstalled things the Tweaking backup didn't back up.

But I still have the question: How do I get Virtual XP to show it is validated/activated.  The keys icon popped up 27 days to go today, so it's counting down each day until I won't be able to use it?  Is there something(s) I can just go into the Registry to change maybe?

Help!

Well, after some suggestions on the Microsoft forum, I got a new version of Virtual XP running, but now it says it isn't validated, and the validation links (keys icon and star icon) don't work, the call in doesn't work, and you can no longer get to a person for XP.  So I decided to run Tweaking Repairs on it, rebooted it to Safe Mode and, not only did the Repairs not make it validatable, but now I can't get it out of Safe Mode.

(1) Any suggestions how to get it to think it is validated?  (It didn't have that problem before the reinstall.)

(2) How do I get it out of Safe Mode???  (I have used Restart, Shutdown with a manual Restart, F8 to use the system to make it Safe Mode to see if it would then reboot out of Safe Mode; nothing seems to help.)

Well, that first page is the one I used (or similar) earlier.  When I try to run the Virtual PC, it says "This update is not applicable to your computer."  I uninstalled Virtual XP before reinstalling it.  It flashed something that I think it couldn't be installed or used or something on this computer, but it shows up in Programs and Features.  When I use the Vmware player, it wants an iso or an install disk; I tried using two W98 CDs I had, but it said it couldn't find the boot file.  When I install just the machine, it doesn't seem I can do anything with it.  And I can't find an "import" option for the Virtual XP, as you suggested.

Also, when I click one of the vmcx files (e.g., Windows XP Mode.vmcx), it says "Could not register the virtual machine," explaining, "The virtual machine could not be registered because the configuration file does not exist.  You should create a new configuration file for the virtual machine."

Since I'm fairly sure I had that file working before I had to reinstall, I must have had all the parts necessary somewhere in my backups.  I'm just not sure where to look.  Is the problem that it's missing from the Registry?  I guess I could load a backup Registry into Notepad and look for the settings I need — if I knew what they were!  Or is there a data file that would have that info?  As I mentioned before, with the previous reinstall onto the new drive, I copied a lot of things I don't want to do this time, so I must have copied the things that made my Virtual XP file work, I'm just not sure what parts to look for.

Do you have any idea why trying to install Virtual PC says it's incompatible with my computer, when it didn't used to be?

I had Virtual XP setup and running on my Windows 7 Professional computer.  I had to replace the c: hard drive and used my HP restore DVDs to do it.  I'm fairly certain I got Virtual XP up and running again, but I think I did it by copying a lot of system files and probably merging an old Reg file.  Then I did something that crashed Windows completely, and my only option was to do the factory reset; this time I used the virtual d: drives factory info to do it.  I decided I didn't want to merge registry files this time nor copy system files, in order to start with a better operating Windows!  However, I seem to be unable to get Virtual XP and Virtual PC up and running again.  I tried to install both, and my Programs and Features says Virtual XP is installed; but my previous .vcmx files say the virtual machine cannot be registered.  When I try to install the 64-bit version of Virtual PC's msu, it says, "This update is not applicable to your computer."  Do I need to uninstall Virtual XP and do Virtual PC first?

I've run a couple of the tests that sites give, and they say my computer can run virtual PC.  And I checked the Windows whatever the list is called, and it says virtual machines are enabled.  Do you have any idea how I can get Virtual XP running again?  I need it for my flatbed scanner and to run a 32-bit GIF Construction set without switching between this computer and my laptop.

Thanks,

Richard

I didn't have the 608 one, so I went to Microsoft to do a manual install.  It started searching for installed updates and just kept doing that forever, so I went back to Windows Update to install the optional one I hadn't quite gotten around to and discovered it's the 608 one!  So it now claims it's downloading that one, although I'm not sure it will be able to do it without a reboot at this point.

Now maybe Memeo can figure out why Memeo Backup can't find the previous backup plan when it's right there in front of it!  (I have a remote session scheduled at 4 p.m.; I hate those!)

Thanks again,

Richard

Thanks.

I use Norton Security Suite, as it comes free for my computer, laptop, tablets, and (I think) phone.  Actually, it probably even turns off Windows Defender.  I think I can only use Windows Defender as a secondary scan utility.  It doesn't always fail the updates, though.  There was one on the 8th that shows Successful; this failed one was yesterday.  I think it will probably update again sometime; I can't seem to get the checking for updates to complete, even after a reboot.  I know there's an optional Windows 7 update available.

I just checked (see attached, sorted by name, not date), and it seems to fail a lot and then have a successful one back and forth.  I don't know if the successful ones contain all the info from the failed ones or not, but it doesn't seem to retry all of the failed ones.  It's another one of those, I guess it doesn't really matter, anyhow, things.  :)

Thanks again.  I'm marking this (SOLVED).

Checked and either it didn't stop or it restarted, but I didn't disable, just stopped...I think.  Anyhow, checked, and it's set as you said.

Is replacing thermal paste something I can do, like get a tube of paste, unscrew some screws, remove, apply, replace?  Or does it require soldering or some other thing best left to an expert?  (It might be cheaper/safer to get a fan and some ice cubes! lol)  But right now, I haven't been having a problem, so it may be an "ain't broke don't fix" situation.

Windows update failure that doesn't seem to be available to try again [I was doing a check for updates, but it was taking forever; big storm started coming through; electricity went off, so I guess I'll just send this now while UPS has battery.]:

Willy: The second tab is CPU, but I eventually found wuauserv, and it is the one I mentioned as the svchost.exe at 25.
Boggin: Windows Update says it is up-to-date, although it says Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.225.1250.0) failed.

Either: "I have 17 svchost.exe's listed [in Windows Task Manager Processes]; is that normal?"

Also, if I disable the Windows Update service, do I have to manually check for updates every Wednesday?

Thanks.

Sorry for the long delay; I have been working on line and unable to stop to do other things.

I removed everything from my msconfig's Startup tab; it had a lot of Window processes runs or some such that I really couldn't tell what they were, and I had no idea where they and others had  come from.  Then I put in the Startup folder just the things I wanted to start when I booted up.  Since then, I haven't been having the spontaneous shutdown problem...at least if I don't have several programs and tabs open in various programs at the same time.  I have also left the side off the computer, which probably isn't a good idea for dust problems, and I sometimes turn a small fan toward the computer hoping it will direct some A/C in that direction (my office sometimes gets to 80°+ even when it's 76° in the living room).  When the main fan comes on full, it is rather loud, but it is quiet on low speed; so there might also be an issue with that fan.

Right now, System Idle Process is generally around 70, fluctuating to 43, 58, 66, etc., sometimes below 43 and sometimes 71 or 72.  The next highest one is svchost.exe at 25, sometimes 26, sometimes 23, 24.  But I don't have that much running at the moment.  When I check by name, I have 17 svchost.exe's listed; is that normal???

Ah, when I go to wauaserv under the Services tab, it doesn't say CPU; but, when I right-click it and choose Go to process, it takes me to that 25 svchost.exe one.

I would mark this as resolved, except I don't remember exactly how that is done.  ??

Thanks, again.

I took the side off my PC to see whether that would help cool it off before I downloaded and ran the monitor, so my temps may not be the same as they were with the side off; however, the last time it turned itself off, the side was off.  I did two monitor screenshots yesterday, one in Safe Mode and one in regular mode; then this morning, before turning on the computer, I dusted and vacuumed the insides and fans as much as I could, sprayed WD-40 into the fans (some dust puffed out!), and then ran the monitor after turning on the computer.  But I can't really get much out of the results (see attached comparison of all three test results side by side).

I usually have Task Manager running all the time, as it seems to help keep programs from freezing (my imagination?) and especially because I often need to End Task or End Process, really, Internet Explorer's extra iexplore.exe *32's to get the only page really there to work and sometimes end other frozen programs.  I know the memory and CPU is high when I have a lot of programs running.  However, I'm still unclear as to why the computer turns itself off.  In the past, having too many windows and programs open at the same time just froze the computer or occasionally crashed it with a memory dump, but it never used to turn off the power.  Can the CPU/memory overload actually shut off the PC?  Could it be there is a spot on the disk that somehow triggers shutoff? — Once or twice, Malwarebytes has gotten almost to the end of a long scan and then OFF!  And I think a Windows Essentials repair may have done that yesterday.  And it seems to me I have had that happen with another scanning program.  (I've done the chkdsk with the option to remove files from bad sectors, and it claims to fix errors it finds or that it hasn't found errors, so it would seem unlikely that there's a glitch on the drive.  On the other hand, sometimes it takes *forever* for Windows to get to the sign-in screen; sometimes it just freezes and I have to restart it.  Then other times it's just zip-zip sign-in/load.)

So in summary, three questions:
1. Can the CPU/memory overload actually shut off the PC power?
2. Could it be there is a spot on the disk that somehow triggers shutoff?
3. Does increased CPU/memory use increase heat?

Thanks, again.

Thanks.  I thought I had resolved the issue by disabling everything in msconfig's startup section and then just adding the basic things I wanted to the Startup folder.  This worked fine until today, when I had several IE windows open, Dreamweaver open with two files, FileZilla open with two tabs, and a couple of Notepad files open, and maybe Windows Mail.  Everything was going fine; I'd accomplished all my work and was writing an e-mail to a client about it, and the computer turned off.  (I am installing the monitor program now to check temps; I'm not sure how to find BIOS for temps.  ??)

Anyhow, my question becomes, does running a lot of programs at the same time increase the temperature of the computer????

Thanks again,

Richard

General Computer Support / Spontaneous Shutdowns

(SOLVED) Last September we had a long session with my Windows 7 problems, including Windows Update not updating and no Restore Points.  I got busy and didn't have a chance to respond to your last message (I think); sorry.  Anyhow, over the next two or three months, Windows started seemingly repairing itself, until it finally was working "normally" again.

More recently, my computer has been spontaneously shutting down — suddenly turning off the power completely, not the typical Windows crash or restart.  It did it in the middle of my long message here earlier, so I am now writing from Safe Mode, which seems to be working a lot better, which is a hint, I think, as to the problem.  I thought before maybe it was a PC issue, as my fan (I think) has been running loud (It doesn't seem to be on at all in Safe mode!  ??).

Anyhow, I've run tweaking.com's Windows Repair from Safe Mode, done a few chkdsk's (which run overnight and longer), scanned with Norton, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, a Registry repair, etc., but the spontaneous shutdowns seem to be getting more frequent.  Sometimes Windows seems to get slower and slower and then PC Off!!  Sometimes Windows stops altogether and then PC Off!!  Sometimes I go away for an hour or so and come back to the PC off!  Sometimes it seems to happen when I have several windows and/or programs open at once, but I don't think that's always the case.

When I was typing this before Safe Mode, the typing wouldn't keep up with me, and then PC Off!  It's typing as fast as I can type now, so I'm guessing you're going to tell me to try shutting down all programs that start automatically and then, if the PC doesn't shut off, start adding them back until it happens again.  However, I'm still going to ask, can Windows power off the PC like that?  Are there any other issues that could be doing it?
Thanks,

Richard

P.s. I put together an image of the items in the msconfig Start Up list and came back to attach it.

What?! -- Work is more important than this?  Ha-ha?

Found it in Task Manager.  It wasn't running; was that a problem?  Or does it just run when needed.  Anyhow, I started it.  And then checked properties for volume; see attached.  Is that the info you needed?  It also lists in Task Manager: PID 10092.  And, when I just now started "Checking for updates..." again, I took a look at the Volume Shadow Copy in Task Manager Services, and it was showing again as stopped, so I started it again.

There are still 11 important Windows updates and two product updates.  I selected the 11, but it won't let me install them directly; it wants me to install W10, instead.  I think I need to reboot to see if they'll install that way.

Thanks.

Did you give up on me?  :)

The vuescan list doesn't seem to install the driver; it seems to install vuescan that would work *with* that driver.  My Windows 8 laptop crashed so much since I wrote this initial question that I finally couldn't even get it to run repairs, safe mode, or anything.  I even had trouble getting it to do a new reinstall.  The result is that I now don't have the driver I found; I'm not sure if *it* was causing the crashes or the scanner program that came with it.  But now W8 no longer sees the scanner.  Only one install of vuescan asked if I wanted to install a driver and supposedly did, but it couldn't find the scanner, and subsequent installs using a different "driver" link didn't ask to install a driver.  Maybe I need to uninstall vuescan before trying a new install from a different driver link?

Also, before, I took every twain file I could find and copied them into the three twain folders that were on my laptop, I think TWAIN32, twain_32, and TWAIN (or some combination like that); when W8 was finding the scanner, it apparently couldn't find a twain to go with it.  You mentioned a "universal twain"; do you know where I might find that?

Thanks.

(Solved)
Thanks.  I had opened Windows Repair, and it said the new version was available, so I went to the site to download it, and the site still said the 3.5.0 was the latest version.  I went ahead and tried the link, and *it* said it was downloading 3.5.1, so I had it do so!  I must have gotten there before you could change the webpage!

Well, maybe my comments helped you find the changes, so it maybe makes up for all the work Julian was doing trying to get my W7 working correctly again.  (It isn't yet!)  And my W8 laptop screwed up so royally, I had to do a reinstall, which also screwed up several times along the way.  lol

Is that how we mark these solved?  Or is there a button to click somewhere?

Thanks again,

Richard

I asked this as part of replies to another post, but I decided it should probably be put in a separate one.  For years, I had to run Virtual XP when Windows 7 came out and UMAX chose not to provide an updated driver, and I've periodically looked for one from some other source.  Last week, I found one that claimed it would work on Windows 7 and up, I think, not sure about the up part.  But I tried installing it on my Windows 8 32-bit laptop, which, I discovered, could run several programs W7 couldn't and that I had thought I could only run in Virtual XP.  (It turned out to be a 32-bit/64-bit problem, not a W7 problem.)

Microsoft safety said there was a problem with the installation program, but Norton Security said it was safe, so I installed it, anyhow.  Amazingly, Devices and Printers can now see the scanner, and it says everything is working correctly.  Also, Device Manager can find the scanner and says it is working.  However, programs like Paint and Photoshop Essentials still can't find the scanner.  A program, Magic Scan, I think, that I think came with the driver crashes Windows 8 when I install it, and I have had to restore W8 a couple of times in trying.

If "Devices and Printers" and "Device Manager" both see the scanner and identify it by name, shouldn't there be a way to get programs that scan to see it, too?  The scanner is a USB scanner and uses Twain.  I have various Twain files in W8 folders where they were in Virtual XP.  Does something have to be run and installed to get the programs to use Twain to see the scanner that W8 can see without Twain?

If I can get this problem resolved, it will mean I can dump Virtual XP and update my W7 main computer to W10.

Thanks.

Additional info: I have also installed Silverfast for both Photoshop (in Plug-ins for Photoshop Essentials) and Twain.  Photoshop sees PL180, and Libre Writer sees it as Silverfast UMAX PL180, but neither will find my UMAX Astra 1200U.  Paint has "From scanner or camera" grayed out (there is no built-in camera on that laptop!).  Also, Scanners and Cameras' Add Device finds the UMAX Astra 1220U, and the Finish button doesn't produce any error messages, but Refresh doesn't show the Scanner.  I unplugged it from a 4-USB hub, and Windows made the disconnect sound; I plugged it into a direct USB port, and Windows made the connect sound.  There were no searching for drivers windows or can't install drivers, as sometimes happens when one moves a device from one USB port to another.

18
FYI: I just discovered in Virtual PC a setup folder and file for my music-composer program, copied it to my W8 laptop, installed the program, and it worked — even before I located and moved a file it said it couldn't find when the program started!  So now it looks like maybe the only things keeping me from upgrading this PC to Windows 10 are [1] getting my flatbed scanner to work on the 32-bit system (since the driver installation didn't seem to work on W7) and [2] wondering whether I can get a working W10 over a slightly broken W7?

Anyhow, the previous question about Protection in a .dll file is no longer necessary!  :)

19
Windows sat at 1 of 12 overnight and was still there this morning, so I just shut it down and restarted it.  Now Windows Update shows 11 Windows updates, so I guess maybe that 1 of 12 got installed but never progressed to two.  (There are two other "Important" updates, but I think I hadn't check-marked them.  One is for Office 2007, when I have Office 2003; I think maybe there's a 2007 trial version somewhere on this computer.  The other is for SQL Server 2008, which is always there and never updates; I don't have Server 2008, and I have removed references to it wherever I can find them in the Registry, etc.; and I can't get it to reinstall, either.)

I am going to try check-marking only one or two Updates at a time to see if that works.  Unfortunately, when I click OK after doing that, I am returned to the Get Windows 10 screen instead of the Install Updates screen; they only appear in the Shut down button, so I can only install them by shutting down and then rebooting.

I have attached screen clips of the other two errors I am getting consistently; the one gives a Microsoft link for the error; typically per Microsoft, it doesn't address the error, or at least it doesn't resolve it.

I run Virtual XP on this computer because I had two or three graphics programs, a music-composition program, and a flatbed scanner that wouldn't work in Windows 7.  I discovered that two of my most-used graphics programs work on Windows 8 apparently because my W7 is on a 64-bit system and my W8 is on a 32-bit system.  The scanner is a UMAX Astra 1220 U, and UMAX chose not to provide Windows 7 and beyond drivers for it.  I've looked for years for a driver, and I finally found one last week, which Microsoft didn't like but Norton said was safe.  Microsoft was sort of right, as I had to restore my laptop several times apparently because of it or its program; however, the scanner now shows up as available and functioning properly both in Devices and Printers and in Device Manager, yet Paint, Photoshop Essentials, and other programs can't seem to see it, so I can't use it.  If I could get it to work, I might consider giving up my music program (and use the Windows 8 app, which is similar) and then install Windows 10 on this computer.

This long explanation is for the question, would installing Windows 10 on top of a broken Windows 7 resolve the issues or just make them worse?  And, though it should be in a separate post, is there a way to get the UMAX scanner recognized by programs that can actually use it?  And I guess a third question:

I think the installation disk for my music program is on a 4.5" floppy disk, so I just copied all the files over; it begins to load, but, when I choose the style, it says there's a protection error in a specified .dll file.  Is this something that can be fixed "unprotected"?  Or is the "Incompatible program" error I received once while trying it correct?

(I think I helped Shane find some errors in Windows Repair for W10, so I don't feel *quite* as guilty about all the time you've spent here.  lol  BTW, the last time I went to use Windows Repair, it said there was a new version, 3.5.1, but the website page still said 3.5.0; I tried the download anyhow, and it showed 3.5.1.  Maybe he just hadn't had time to change the webpage yet?)

Anyhow, thanks some more! :)

20
The only shadow I could find in Services was Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider (swprv); it was Stopped.  Nothing in Services seems to have a volume number.  I also checked in Component Services and found nothing.  This is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit; am I looking in the wrong place?  Am I looking for the wrong name?

21
I went to reboot down my W7 computer, since the Update page was still searching, and it showed updates to load on  the shutdown button.  Shutting down produced several of the same error popups that I meant to mention, as well.  It says something about an error with cmd.exe; I think

It has now been saying installing 1 of 12 for several minutes, basically since my previous reply.  That means 6 were installed the last time it did this, when it was on that overnight, so I turned of the computer, and then rebooted.  My dogs said you were going to walk us an ago, so I will see if it's still on 1 when we get back.

22
You are too fast!  lol  (That is a complaint I get when I'm trying to design a website for someone who doesn't want to take the time to make approvals!)

Ummmm....., there is a problem with that tab.  It apparently can't find any available drives, so it won't let me go to Configure.  Are the problems that can't be fixed and can supposedly be found in the CBS.log related to any of this?

Thanks, btw.  Above and beyond.

23
That was sort of funny.  I spent all day yesterday doing various repairs, etc., on the computer...and I think my laptop, with somewhat limited results.  (I think the entire computer froze, so I just shut it down.  (That reminds me: it often stays on the "Shutting down..." screen (after all the closing this and that screens) forever without shutting down.)  Then, first thing today, I discovered your new post, so I started doing that.  And then, just now, I was about to do my reply, and it said there was a new post, so I'd better check that first!

The Windows Repair...results.doc shows the results of Windows Repair, which I tried to do from Safe Mode when your first Command Prompt took forever in regular mode and then produced errors in Safe Mode.  I have attached the CBS.log from todays scan.  After I finally finished (gave up) on Windows Repair in Safe Mode, I rebooted, and did the Command Prompt entries (see commandprompt_results.txt.)  The last command is still just sitting there.

Oh, and Windows Update is still claiming "Updates were installed: Never" — even though it has a list of all the ones installed over the years!  It wants to install Windows 10, and I don't want it to.  When I did "Check for updates" this morning, it never finished; I think something else froze, so I rebooted in the meantime.  I started a new check as I started this paragraph, and it's still running, so I may get back to you on that one.  Before I had 18 to 20 available; I think maybe a few of those installed, but I don't know if more have or not.  It claims as it's shutting down to be on 6 of 18 (or wherever for that day) and then goes all night without progressing to the next number.  I am going to leave it on Checking.... and go walk my dogs.  If I have a result when I return, I'll add another reply.

I'm not sure you will want to read another reply after this extensive one!  :)

Well, then, maybe it was the new command I found the first time that worked.  I wasn't sure when I went back to look that I was at the same spot or that I copied the one I had actually used.  But, if you found one that will work in your program, I won't have to worry about looking for it again!  :)

Also, I know once in Windows Repair for Windows 7, it said something couldn't be completed.  The entire path for the command was given, so I copied it, opened the Command Prompt, and pasted it into the Command Prompt, and it worked directly from the Command Prompt.

25
Thanks so much.  In answer to an earlier question, which you may have figured out by now, it was the two erroneous replies *I* made before I found the Modify button that needed deleting after I removed the replies' text and put it where it belonged.  So it was my fault in the first place (answer to the deleted in error part); but thanks for getting me this info.  I really appreciate it.

I'm letting you know now that I have received this (great!!!) result:
---------------------------------------------------------
Scanning Windows Packages Files.
Started at (9/13/2015 8:06:09 PM)

No problems were found with the Packages Files.

Files Checked & Verified: 6,557

Done (9/13/2015 8:33:19 PM)
---------------------------------------------------------

It is still doing the Reparse check (it usually finds one, which I correct, and it's back the next time).  But I have 2,726,640 files (or files and folders; I'm never sure what is being tallied there), and it is on about 420,000 now, so that will take a while to complete!  I wanted you to know that the missing files part worked and that I'm not sitting around ignoring all this when you went the extra mile to get these for me fast!  :)

I will let you know further results after I reboot to see whether Windows Update updates and maybe after I reboot to safe mode to do a full check/repair.

Thanks again,

Richard
