I don't have an answer, but I am having a similar (same?) issue. When you get the "Modern Setup Host has stopped working", go into computer management and take a look at the most recent application error. Mine always looks something like:

Faulting application name: SetupHost.exe, version: 10.0.10240.16384, time stamp: 0x559f385f
Faulting module name: msvcrt.dll, version: 7.0.9600.17415, time stamp: 0x545055fe

BTW, how did you get a hold of a MS human, I haven't yet?

What is the best way of requesting a real person at MS to take a look at this? this isn't working: https://partner.support.services.microsoft.com/en-us/contact/menu/hardware/windowspc/ts/?osmcsignin=true&wa=wsignin1.0

Hi all - I've seen this reported elsewhere (without a fix), and the  problem is believed to be an out of date msvcrt.dll. My version is 7.0.9600.17415; can anyone who upgraded from 8.1 to 10 successfully let me know what their version of msvcrt.dll was? All other windows test/repair/fix have been completed, system should upgrade cleanly, but won't. Been working on this for over a week now, so any help is appreciated.

Log info follows:

My Satellite S55Dt powered off unexpectedly, and I'm stuck trying to recover from the consequences. Running SCF, many seemingly corrupt catalogs, manifests, and payloads were initially identified. I've managed to work through all the issues except 9 objects DISM finds corrupt or can't find to replace corrupted ones.

Scanning Windows Packages Files.
Started at (8/16/2015 11:51:41 AM)

These Files Are Possibly Corrupt (Bad Digital Signature): (Total: 2)
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Package_21_for_KB2975061~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.0.cat
C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\Package_21_for_KB2975061~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.0.mum

2 Combined Problems were found with the packages files, these files need to be replaced
(These mainly only effect installing Windows Updates.)
The SFC (System File Checker) doesn't scan and replace some of these files, so you may need to replace them manually.

If you need help in replacing these files, post on the Forums at Tweaking.com for help.

Well, I do need help, so am posting here.

Thanks.
