General Computer Support / Re: Connecting computer to TV via HDMI

Thank you.  That should be a clever work around.  The HDMI was fully functional in Windows 7.  My problem started with Windows 10.

General Computer Support / Connecting computer to TV via HDMI

I have not been able to connect my Dell XPS laptop to the TV using HDMI cable since upgrading from Win7 to Win10.

After posting the above, I decided to ReStart the computer with the HDMI cable attached.  I now get video on the TV but no sound.  When I click on Sound and Playback devices; I see the message AMD HDMI Output Not Plugged In.

 :cheesy: Thank you!
It took some trial and error on my part, but I think I am up and running.  My image is a couple weeks old; so now I need to do some updating.

Again, THANK YOU!

General Computer Support / Windows 10 Critical Error
« on: December 03, 2015, 12:46:25 pm »
I turned my Dell XPS 1640 laptop on and eventually received the following Windows 10 error message.

Critical Error

Start menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in.

I signed in again and again only to receive the same error.  I then tried booting into safe mode and running Tweak.com 3.7.  I tried to run Repairs and the pre-scan cmd came up and nothing happened.  I let it sit for about an hour.

I have a backup image dated 11.20.2015 and a windows 7 64bit repair cd.  After booting from the CD it did not find the image.

I am out of ideas.  You are my first stop.

If it matters or helps, both of my Dell computers started with Vista then upgraded to 7 and now 10.

General Computer Support / safe mode and reparse points

Under Windows 10, when I click on Tweaking ReBoot in Safe Mode, it reboots in safe mode without networking.

The attached "reparse points.pdf" file shows 4 reparse points that when I click repair, don't get repaired.

Number one; I never really thought that Tweaking Repairs or Performance Tweaks caused my problem.  I asked because everything started about the same time.

Number two:  I had tried the answers.microsoft procedures and others; none of which worked.

Number three:  I wish I could remember where I found this but it worked for me;

Open Internet Explorer, Internet Options, Advanced, click "Reset" (Internet Explorer) Restart Computer
Open Internet Explorer, Internet Options, Content, Feed Settings, Remove check marks for all advanced options.
Open Windows Live Mail, click Views, click the Quick Views icon and remove check mark for "Unread Feeds"

I currently do not use RSS feeds.  I clicked Feeds in the Quick View pane and deleted all feeds listed.

The RSS initialization error was gone and then I received a group of Windows Updates.  Because of the updates, I ran Tweak Repairs again.  The RSS initialization error message returned.  I ran the above procedures and it is gone again.

General Computer Support / WINDOWS LIVE MAIL 2012

After running "tweak repair" or "system tweaks", I started getting the following error when executing "Windows Live Mail 2012" on my Windows 7 laptop:

"Initialization of RSS feed support failed. RSS feeds could not be updated."

Do you have any ideas?

Thank you

My computer is a Dell XPS Studio which came with Vista installed and, eventually, upgrade disks for Windows 7.

I had read these posts and was ready to attach a "Pre-scan Log" which indicated 6,969 files verified and 3,484 files corrupt.  I didn't count them.  :cheesy: I decided to run FixWU.exe one more time to record the error message that I got on the first run.  The error message was 0cx8000247.  I did a quick search on this number and found the following link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/error-code-0xc8000247-cant-install-updates/198166df-9549-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

The answer to this question referred to the need for an update to  Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (IRRT)  and gave the following link:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02219204&lc=en&cc=uk&destPage=document&dlc=en&product=

Upon completion of the IRRT update, I ran FixWU again and it ran successfully.  Remember all of the re-starts were performed.  I then ran the Pre-scan again and found no errors.  I then ran Windows Update successfully.

I hope that this information is helpful.
