I rarely have any luck getting windows fixed when it dies in the middle of an update, mainly because the registry sections, files and all get all screwed up. I mean we are talking 50,000+ registry keys and files each!
So normally a repair install would be a good idea, depending on the update and the problem it caused, now if all other updates install just fine and it is only IE then I do have a way to make windows forget IE and let you install it fresh, if you want to give it a try that is

Having the system go out in the middle of updates can be very bad, as you can see.
Have you tried downloading and running the windows system readiness tool yet? It can sometimes replace and fix the missing files and anything else it finds.

hi, i also recommend shane suggestion as it is the only way of getting back all the things in windows 7 and it is easy running tool and almost fixes any problem of pending updates. there is no other tool for this. all the pending is stored in one directory and this tool really works in those situation.
