Hi jrny2k,

I too have the same (similar) error but what does this mean and how foes one 'fix' the error.  Went to the website help (via Computer Management) but there was nothing specific for msvcrt.dll, version: 7.0.9600.17415.  Can anyone out there shed any light on the matter?

Thanks,

Erik

PS: I have been able to get help form Micosoft Answer Desk (four times in fact) via their 'chat line' and remote computer access service and am now awaiting a call back from a level two tech (they did ring back but very early in the morning before I was out of bed).  Hoping to hear back from them today.  Will keep you posted.

My computer manufacturer wasn't too helpful insisting that I use the Media Creation tool (which I explained twice that I had already tried that method) to download an ISO file which I have mounted/burned to a USB and DVD respectively but neither work.

Hi JHapperson: Did what you suggested (in fact have tried both on numerous previous occasions) but still no luck.  Also read a suggestion today:

1: Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdateOSUpgrade]
2: Within the key, you’ll need to create a new 32-bit DWORD with the name AllowOSUpgrade and set its value to 0x00000001.
Once you’re done editing the registry, exit the editor and open up the Control Panel. Navigate to Windows Update and press the Check for Updates button. If you edited the keys correctly, you will now see the update; press the Get Started button to start the upgrade process.

After doing this Windows Update says "Upgrade to Windows 10" but this also failed with an error code C190011F.  Also there are two other previous "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home - Failed" with error codes 80070652 and 80246010.  Confusing why there are three different error codes.

Could it be that my computer is not yet compatible to be upgraded? I have updated the BIOS and also drivers.  There has to be a reason out there somewhere but what is it?  Anyone else having the same problem or have found a solution?

Erik

Shane: I have tried your Windows Repair tool but not ALL the settings (only the default settings) and only once. So maybe I should try again but I have spent so much time trying to upgrade to Windows 10 that after 4 weeks I am running out of energy and patience -  even motivation.  At least Windows 8.1 is running fine.

JHapperson: I have tried the methods you suggest (creating an ISO file). I think you have to 'mount' that file, think I did that correctly but maybe you (or Shane) could clarify the steps to take once I have downloaded the ISO file.  I got the ISO download maybe two or three weeks ago.  Is it best to download a more recent version if indeed there is one?

Thanks, Erik

Like millions of people all over the world I was waiting expectantly for the July 29 launch of the Windows 10 upgrade but after numerous attempts by whatever conceivable method people (from the various internet forums on the subject) were saying worked for them, HAS NOT worked for me.

What methods have I done to try an upgrade?
1.   Using Windows Update (this has only happened  a couple of times) but generally Windows update does not advise me of an the upgrade.
2.   Using the force Windows Update method i.e. in the CMD type wuauclt.exe/updatenow
With both methods the download/installation fails when the progress bar is approximately 1/3 of the way across. Note that in the past three days I have received 10 "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home failed"  in the View Update History of Windows Update.
Note that I have the Get Windows 10 app in the taskbar and to date it states that "Your free upgrade is on the way" or "Your upgrade is reserved").  Not once has it indicated that my reservation is ready to upgrade which interestingly enough, occurred on my wife's ASUS F3E notebook running Windows 7 (originally Vista) which is several years old now. She had no problems upgrading to Windows 10 on her notebook whatsoever.
My notebook  is also an ASUS with an Intel Core i&-3630QM 2.40 Ghz processor, 64-bit operating system, 1GB ram, Intel HD Graphics 4000, NVIDIA GeForce 610M and a terabyte hard disk - seemingly well above the specifications required for Windows 10.
3.   I have also tried using the Windows Media Creation Tool (on numerous occasions now) but it also fails when it states that "Modern Setup Host has stopped working" during the "Making sure that you're ready to install" stage of the set up.  This has been the main method I have tried AND HAS INVOLVED OVER 200Gb of downloads (thank got I recently changed my ISP plan to include unlimited data).

I have sought help from Microsoft Support on four occasions (with them remotely accessing my computer to see what was going on in my computer) but with no luck and am now waiting to be contacted by their 'Level 2' support technician and all ASUS has advised is to take my notebook to their service depot for "assessment" suggesting it could be a hardware issue (note BIOS and all drivers have been updated). How they could work out (over the phone) it is a hardware issue beats me!  They also say that my notebook model does not support Windows 10 upgrade via Windows Update and that I have to use the Media Creation Tool.

So what can be going on?  Anyone else have the same problem or even a solution? Why am I unable to upgrade to Windows 10?

Looking forward to some responses and maybe a solution.

Thanks, Erik

Hi Shane,

Back again after a couple of weeks.

I downloaded the latest (3.1.2) version of the Windows Repairs program and ran the Pre Scan with the new .CAT Files box ticked. The result was no more corrupt .mum files. Well done; the Pre Scan section of the program is a great addition and should solve the problem for many people using the program.

I then tried SFC /SCANNOW but it still showed corrupt files which it couldn't fix (CBS log attached).

Then tried Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup which worked OK.

Finally tried Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which found problems but was not able to download from source files (DISM log attached).

So my question is if the Pre Scan has fixed all the problems and made the necessary repairs why do SFC and DISM still find problems.  As I asked earlier is there any connection between the files Pre Scan finds and fixes and those that SFC and DISM find but cannot fix the problems?

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Erik

Hi Shane,

Thanks for putting me in the picture - much appreciated.

I won't bother you any more as I know you are busy with other people's issues but I will look forward to further developments in the program.

Erik

That sounds good news especially for all those that have got missing or corrupt files.

One thought - as you have now are able to repair the Reparse Points and the Environmental Variables it seems logical to be able to replace the missing package files (is that possible?) and then to address the corrupt .mum files (as you indicate) either as separate processes or both together if that's possible?  Can this be one stage or would it need to be two?  It would also be good to be able to obtain or replace any missing Package file via the program rather than having to seek your help via the forums?

Another thought - it seems that Peter might have got confused with the new Pre Scan tool thinking that it would repair automatically.  Changing the name (to Pre Scan as you have done would partly solve this I think - from a users point of view anyway).  But I wonder whether having the Pre Scan as a separate tool which includes two and soon presumbably, three repair options might not also be confusing as up until Version 3.0.0 the only repair options are contained in the one section (Repairs).  Why not include these Pre Scans and then the repairs under the Repairs section say at the beginning?  This is what is done under No. 29 "Repair Windows 8 Component Store" i.e Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.

Finally is there any relationship between SFC /Scannow, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and Windows Package files, Reparse Points and Environmental variables (which are supposed to fix Windows Store corruptions) and the Pre Scan and repair options?

I hope you don't mind me continuing with this feed but I am interested in the process; however I do not understand computer programming.  That's why I think you made the Windows Repairs program for people like me.

Regards,

Erik

This is copied from Shane's response to a similar request for help on a different thread.

Quote
"On the reparse points, I made Windows Repair v3.1.0 last night and it is in testing till monday, so it is a beta right now. But I built a new repair tool to fix the reparse points.

So if you want grab the beta here (Or just wait till I release it on monday)
http://tweaking.com/files/setups/tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_setup_beta.exe

Then when you run it you will see a new button with the pre repairs scan, and it is the Repair Reparse Points tool, it should fixes those for you. If you use it let me know the results"

I had the same issue and then downloaded the 3.1.0 beta yesterday and it worked to repair the reparse points.  Or you can wait for the official update which is scheduled for Monday

Hope this helps.

Hi Shane,

Just downloaded Windows Repair v. 3.1 (got the download from another similar forum link) and used the new Repair Reparse Points feature which worked fine.

Will now wait to see what developments you come up with re the corrupt Bad Digital SIgnature .mum files - "I wonder if the api I call to check the signature of the files isn't seeing the .cat file for some reason. I will look into that and see if another file is needed".

Regards,

Erik

Shane,

Thanks for the four missing files.  Everything now OK except all those corrupt .mum files but you indicate that these are now really a problem (see attacghment for latest Pre Repairs Scan).

Looking forward to the 3.1 update.

Once again thanks for all of your help I don't know how you manage the time to do all that you do for everyone.

Regards,

Erik

Hi Shane,

Have done everything as per your instructions and have attached an updated log which shows:
- there are now only 4 missing package files
- there are now 57 corrupt files with bad digital signatures
- there are still 3 incorrect reparse points
- there are now no environmental issues

I have done a SFC Scannow which indicated problem files and then did a Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup which was successful followed by a Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthwhich failed to repair corrupt files.

So there has been some success but not 100%.

One piece of good news is that the failed Windows update (KB2976978) that I was not able to update for months has now updated successfully.

Also my computer seems to work OK without any real problems so I don't understand what thes missing or corrupt files mean.  Are they significant?

Where to from here?

Shane. Have extracted the zip files you sent (thanks) but yes they do require permission to copy them.  Would appreciate you posting the right click menu option.

Willy2. Will wait to see if downloading the package files that Shane has sent me will solve the problem before I try your options.  Will also download and look at the Everything program you have suggested. Re number of failed updates I have only ever had the one so I don't understand why I should have 110 missing package files?  Have tried the Windows repair tool in the past, also SFCScannow and the DISM on line tools none of which did any good or repaired the missing or corrupt files.

A question to both of you.  What is the effect of missing so many package files as my computer still works OK?

And once agin many thanks for your efforts.

Hi Shane and Willy2,

Thanks for showing interest in this topic.  It's interesting that the Pre Repairs Scan states that you need to go to the forums to try and get a solution as to how to replace the missing files.  It would be useful if this information could be included in the program and/or with a link to an appropriate download site.

Anyway I have attached the log as suggested and requested by Shane and will see what the outcome may be.

Looking forward to a response and a solution hopefully.

I have just completed a Pre Repairs Scan which has come up with numerous missing Windows Package files.  Tha log states that "problems where found with the packages files, these files need to be replaced". The SFC (System File Checker) doesn't scan and replace some of these files, so you may need to replace them manually".  How do I replace/re-install these missing files?

Also there are three Reparse points which are not "pointing to the correct default location".  How do I correct this error (the log does identify the correct default location)?

Finally there is one problem with the Environmental Variables which states the "folder in the 'Path' variable doesn't exist".  How do I rectify this?

Any assistance would be gratedully received.  Thanks
