Tweaking.com Support & Help / Re: envelope printer small bug/design issue

Wow, full of yourself, are you?

I'll chock this up to your having limited experience multitasking, because otherwise your reply is condescending, ignorant and misinformed.  The workflow is already optimized to the extent possible.  I could explain why this is so, but I get the impression that you'd just have a dismissive reply.

I mean, honestly, this suggestion to "remember printer settings" is such common-sense that I honestly felt like it was a small bug that needed fixing, or possibly an oversight if Shane does not have multiple printers, he may have never noticed that all the settings needed to be re-entered anytime you switched the printers.  Not sure why you are so dismissive of it.

I have not been on this forum for approx a year.  Apparently things have changed, as I see that Shane apparently no longer has time to man the forum (which is fully understandable....).  Shane's replies were never condescending or uninformed.

Anyway, I do appreciate your passing the request/information along to Shane, and I respect the service that he GIVES to the community with his quality software.

Why?  ...because 1 printer is occupied with a large print job, but I still need to print an envelope....

Actually no.

It remembers those settings fine as long as you never switch the dropdown box to a different printer.  When I was only using 1 printer, I never had to mess with those settings.

My suggestion is that it would be nice to have the program remember those settings both DURING use (switching back-and-forth between printers AND remember those settings upon restarting the program.

Hi,

Excellent program, we've talked about the prog back when you first released it.

Anyway, the current issue/bug is:

I have 2 printers.  If you switch printers in the program, it forgets ALL of the printing settings you configured -- (envelope size, paper bin, print quality).

The program should really default to the previous settings you were using with that printer.  For example, I always use a #10 envelope, auto paper bin, and highest print res.  I *usually* print with my old Laserjet 4L, but sometimes use my Officejet R80 if the 4L is printing a large job.  Everytime I change the printer in this program, it makes me re-enter all 3 of those printing options.

Can you make the program remember those last settings for each printer?

thanks!

General Computer Support / Re: ie11 protected mode question

You are probably right about the reason.  My cousin really wanted to stick with how he has always done it, so that left IE as the only choice.  I'll leave the protected mode off unless he requests otherwise.

Thanks Shane, you're the best.  I came to the same conclusion that it really isn't a big deal to leave it off.

Believe it or not, I could not find an alternative solution (extension or otherwise) to this "Email picture" for either FF or Chrome, so IE became the only option.  That said, I cannot fathom why FF or Chrome do not have this feature.  I can see how some people would find it very convenient.

This isnt ENHANCED protected mode, just regular Protected Mode that is found under the SECURITY tab of IE.

Hi Shane,

I wanted to ask your opinion on this.  My cousin, who is not PC savvy, bought a new laptop (Win 8.1).  He uses IE(11) because it is the only browser that allows you to right-click on a photo and "Email Picture" -- and the browser will actually email the photo, not just a link to the photo.  That is an important feature for the workflow he does.

He runs Kaspersky AV because he is familiar with it.  He doesn't download any software.  He mostly uses email, browses news & financial websites with IE, and watches some YouTube for entertainment.

He has had a few issues with IE11 on this new PC, and they are easily solved by disabling "Protected Mode" under Security.  I know that I can solve each issue one-by-one by a variety of repairs, but I went the easy route and just disabled Protected Mode.

How big of a deal do you think this is?  I do not have a strong grasp of what Protected Mode really adds.

thanks,
bobby

Regarding not printing when Picture is unchecked...

OK, version 1.2.0 worked fine.  Printed fine with Picture unchecked.

1.3.0 does not work.
1.4.0 does not work.
1.4.1 does not work.

Suggestion.  If you like your old code, you could always include (and default to using) a 1px clear.gif for people who do not want a photo printed.  So unchecking that option would simply enable your 1px clear.gif.  Sort of like the old webpage HTML hacks.

1) I always DL and run the PORTABLE version.  It has a security shield on its logo always, but never asks for permission to run.  I edit the manifest to eliminate the Admin requirement.

2) this new EXE does not have the shield on it, and it always aks me to run.

3) FWIW, previous versions of this app (always Portable), it DID work when you uncheck the Print photo option, so you must have made changes to the code from earlier versions that I DL'd.  They worked fine.  I will try to figure out when the bug started, I will try to do that later tonight.

11
It is definitely behaving different.  I did drop it in the folder (Portable version) with that manifest file present.

12
Seems to work.  But the exe, windows is asking whether I want to run it or not.  Your previous Printer exe's, this did not require me to give such permission.

FOUND THE PROBLEM in 1.4.1-

Problem exists when you uncheck ENABLE PICTURE PRINTING -- won't print.

If you leave that enabled, then it will print.

So there is your bug.  Since I never print a picture, I would prefer that the bug be fixed.

RPESQ again--
Same problem here -- not printing on Win 7 64-bit, running as Limited User.  I had not tried the newest version.  It just does nothing when you press print.

Older versions worked.  I will try to retrieve one from my recycle bin and post back when the problem arose.  So now, though, only older version works.

15
Excellent, thanks.

I would suggest that you consider making this the default behavior, at least for the portable version.  One of the aspects of using portable apps is that a person often does not even have access to the admin credentials (such as a cubicle worker).  And other security-conscious users, who run as Limited Users, do so for a reason and do not expect to have to enter passwords for non-system-level apps.  -My opinion-

Thanks for the great apps that you offer.

My laserjet 1020 is pretty old came out in 2007, it is amazing it still works lol

My Laserjet 4L came out in 1993, and yes it is my everyday printer.  I currently print approx 2,000 pages per month.  Getting harder to find MB's with real parallel ports on them.  The parallel to USB cables do not work anywhere near as well.

Hi,

I run as a Limited User for security reasons.

Why does "E.P. 1.2.0 Portable" throw up a user account control dialog box, which requires me to enter my Admin credentials?  It's a simple envelope printer -- no way it should need Admin rights to run!
