Bingo!  I uninstall some "search module" one of my kiddos had downloaded and everything is now running.  Easy to find as I date sorted on program installs.

Thanks!

IE7 works in Windows safe mode.  I reset the settings while in safe mode but after booting back into normal mode, no luck -- same error.  Some hope as things are working in safe mode.  I am going to try a "clean boot" here soon and will post the results for that tomorrow.

I should have mentioned this, also, but IE will not run in "safe" mode, either.  Likewise, running Inetcpl.cpl results in a "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working." with a "Faulting application rundll32.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b0e1, faulting module Secur32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18541, time stamp 0x4ec3e394, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000021dc, process id 0x2d88, application start time 0x01cfa27ec7b59960." in the Event log.  I have also done a full virus scan using Malwarebytes and the box is clean.

I could also reinstall Vista but it's more fun and educational to try to figure-out what's going on!

It's an interesting problem.  It did fail after using the Tweaking program, but I used another program after that, also, both in an update to correct a Windows update error which Mircosoft's "Fix It" program failed to resolve, as it itself recognized and reported.

Will continue to investigate and will update this thread again.  Opera 12 is also being affected but not Firefox.

Thanks!

IE7 does the same thing after I downgraded.  I'm getting an "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message with a "Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e01e78, faulting module Secur32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18541, time stamp 0x4ec3e394, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000021dc, process id 0x194c, application start time 0x01cfa1649936ef0a." in the Application log!  Running Vista SP2.

No big deal, as Firefox continues to work great!!

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Broke Virtual Box
« on: May 31, 2014, 08:46:51 pm »
Great program, love it!!  However, it broke VirtualBox on my Windows 7 64-bit machine.  The following website fixed things for me somewhat:

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12087?cversion=0&cnum_hist=37

Namely,

Quote
I found a solution that worked for me after comparing two ProcMon Traces of a working and a broken installation:
    HKEY_CURRENT_ROOT\Classes\CLSID\{00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32 and
    HKEY_CURRENT_ROOT\Classes\CLSID\{00020424-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32

The (Default) entry said "oleauth32.dll". After changing that to "C:\Windows\system32\oleaut32.dll" in both locations it worked again!

However, VirtualBox will not check for updates; still working on that one.
