I don't remember the diagnostics I used. I contacted Dell an had me run the diagnostics. I think it used the F12 function during BIOS boot up. I took almost an hour to check every thing. It came up with no errors. Dell wants me to send the laptop to one of there repair centers. Which means they would replace the HD, losing my data, not to mention the cost quoted at $450. Again like I said the machine is 6 years old it's time to replace with latest an greatest machine.

I think it is spinning up because it looks like it's trying to boot up. It boots until the windows icon appears and the working circle of dots appears, then the dots stop being displayed, only the windows icon shows, and just sits there with the hard drive light blinks at very slow rate. Also running diagnostic says did not find any thing wrong with the disk!!!

We will see when the new machine comes it and making this drive as a USB drive if I can recover any data. Keep your fingers crossed.

Using the drive in a USB enclosure to try to recover the data files is what I thinking of trying also. Since the lap top is about 6 Years old I have ordered a new machine (may be I can sell it on Ebay for parts to recover some of the cost towards the new machine). I will really miss the 18" screen of my old machine, I could only find 17" machines.

Your right  hiring recovery specialist company is extremely expensive, an WAY outside my budget/income.

I dropped  :shy: :shy: :shy: :shy: :shy: my Alien 18 laptop and now it will not boot up. So is it possible to replace the HHD with a SSD with Windows 10 OS installed to get it to boot up. Then is there a way I can connect the old drive (as drive other then C, possible drive F) so I can recover my data files?

Thanks

We are almost I'm in Salt Lake City Utah.  :cheesy:

You not accepting PM is very understanding

I used the USB to do a back up, meaning I don't have the ISO any more. Because I was going to do a clean reinstall, that's when bottom fell out. As for my hard drive I will go ahead and replace it. I am also going to replace the memory just to be on the safe side.

OK I got it to run. I do not think if there was any errors, I did not see the last test because it restarted before I could read it. It did cuase some thing because I got the blue screen of death, with a message of "contact your tec support or adm for fewer assistance" It does not reboot and I cycle the power to reboot. What does this message mean  Before when the blue screen came up it would do a dump to log file (I think) then reboot.

General Computer Support / USB Drive Problem
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:41:58 am »
I to have a drive problem. I create a volume on my USB external drive so I could run a repair install (unsuccessful even after using a flash drive) using the new volume. Now I can not get the drive to work. The drive keeps resetting and windows says that the volume I (my new volume) needs to be formatted. When I click on the ok button, it can not find it because the drive has restarted. I can see the main volume and even long enough to start a copy of a folder I need off it. The copy starts then crashes because the drive has rested. I can reformat the entire drive after I can get this importunate folder saved.
I was wondering is there a way I can save this folder then erase the bad volume or reformat the drive with out losing this fold?

It's not the down load, the download work's with out errors. I'm using a download manager (IMG Download Manager. The errors comes when the repair install start copying files. It get up to about 10% the error pops up.  Yes I erased/formatted  the flash drive on each try.

Walking out to flag pole with white flag. I guess I am going have use this this version and hope for the best.
4 downloads of ISO file with out success (ERROR 0x80070241). I think it's WFI connection. I'm using a USB dongle for my internet connection, and repair will not run with out it..

I'm going to rerun the repair install right aftern I post this. I was doing to make a screen capture video to show the errors I was seeing. As I was making this video I noticed a lot of file denied access of my anti virus (AVAST), even after I deactivated it. So I uninstalled it an rerun your program, there was no errors!!!!!   So I will rerun the repair install (before reinstalling AVAST) to see what happens.

I will kept you informed on what happens.

The attached screen shots are of Program Files and Performance Info.
As for what test that came up with errors, Was in the first 2 test (using default settings). Is there a log some where I could send you? The errors flash by so fast I could read, the only thing I could read was the number of error.
