Yeah, I would definitely back up data as your main priority. Hook it up as a secondary hard drive with another computer and get as much important data as you can. Second I would clone it to a new hard drive, then only after that you then can start testing it (Depending on how much space you have, you may want to manually back up files and save the cloning for later). You do not want to stress out the hard drive anymore by running these tests before backing up data. Backing up data is always your first priority.


Then after that I would run
HD regenerator 2011 off of Hiren's boot CD. And you can do a full sector scan (DO NOT USE REPAIR MODE!). If it has a lot of bad sectors, then I wouldn't trust the hard drive anymore.

Then I would run the diagnostics off from the hard drive manufacturer.  If it fails the SMART test. Then I would not trust it.


Also, what is the history on your laptop? Did you get any blue screens before this started happening? Especially ones that relate to hard drive problems.

It doesnt matter wireless or wired. They are on the same network, it is just 2 different ways to connecting to the router. Wireless can see wired and wired can see wireless devices just fine.

Well, what I mean is that, of course they will still have the same public IP address. (Maybe depending on the ISP)

What I'm talking about is this:

If I have a 4 port cable modem. And if I have a setup like this:

1 router is wired that is connected through the cable modem via port 1.

1 router is wireless that is connected through the cable modem via port 2


Now with this setup, there is no way that a wireless router can see the wired router. Therefore one would assume, if someone got past all the security in the wireless router, there is no way he can get to my wired router and my other wired computers.


Now with this setup like this:

1 wired router connected to the cable modem. Then I have a ethernet cable connecting from the wired router to the wireless router(In it's WAN port). The wireless router is getting it's internet connection from the wired router. Also the wireless router is now part of the network. So if anyone got access to my wireless router and got past the security, and if he could connect to my internal ip address. Then he would have access to my computers on the wired network. In theory, because I do have software firewalls as well.

I'm just wondering if it's a security risk. Because I want to buy a used cable modem. I would have to spend more on 4 port cable modem. I just want to know recommendations, or if this matters.

Again, I just want one wireless router not to even see the wired router at all! Not sure if it makes much difference.

For my phones and such here at home and the tv I have them hooked to the wireless while I keep all my systems connected to wired, but that is for one reason, speed.

My wired is 1 GB network speeds and so when i am moving files from one machine to another I can go the full speed of my hard drives, where as if i try to do the same over wireless it is only a fraction of the speed. That and wired is way more stable, it doesnt get interference from outside sources like wireless does.

Also rule of thumb is, if you are gaming always do wired. Last thing you want is to be gaming online and have your wireless freak out for a sec because the microwave turned on and you just got your but kicked from high ping lol

But what's the connection setup look like then? Do you have a 4 port cable modem? Or I'm assuming you just have one cable modem that has wireless and wired?
Or you can have the cable modem that has wired, and you run a wired router and a wireless router?

Monday afternoon blues have set in.  I downloaded the HP Vista Install Disks as suggested, burned them and when run I get the message: "This PC is not supported by the System Recover Discs.  You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs."  Minor setback.  Also, I can't get out of Safe Mode.  It seems the registry that regedit is having me view and edit is NOT the registry that the system is using.

Side comment.  The expression "L00py" when applied to the human brain, describes the mental state we often get into when tackling a problem or bad memory, a sad loss or other PTSD like experience.  It's the inability to stop thinking about something.  It's the loop-tape repetitive thought that just won't go away.  Computer programmers often get into that state of mind.  It's one of the reasons I forced myself to quit the profession.  The past few weeks have been that kind of L00py experience for my brain. (It's funny my spell-checker isn't catching the spelling of loopy with the embedded zeros, hehe.) And I'm waiting to get out of this conundrum so I can get back to the relaxed brain of a semi-retired person. 

When I quit my career as a coder, I tried to clear my long-term memory of all the rules I had embedded there.  I'm here to report that the knowledge is still there after 15 years of trying to forget.  I guess we should be thankful there is no regedit for the brain.

Well, what you could do is boot up your OS as a secondary hard drive. Using "hirens boot cd" as a mini xp.

Go into "C:\Windows\System32\config"
back up your current "SOFTWARE" file. To some where.

Then replace "SOFTWARE" with an older backup. Although you said your older back ups were missing the keys?


But what you could do is just for fun, is reinstall windows vista 32bit on other drive on the same computer with the same setup. And take that  SOFTWARE file from a fresh install and replace it with your current OS (But not before you make a backup). Just to see what happens. If something goes wrong, you can always revert to the back up.

Network advice, should I run my wireless router through my wired router?

I wanted to buy my own cable modem, so I can save money. So I don't have to pay for renting one out. The question is this, the cable modem that I rent out has 4 ports to it. I usually run that through another port instead of my wired router, which also connects to all of my personal computers via ethernet cable.

The only reason I use a wireless router (not always on) is because I use it for my smart phone. The question I have is that I don't like to run it through my wired router, because the theory is if someone ever hacked into my wireless router, I think they can get through my wired router and hack into my wired computers. That's my theory anyways.

Granted my wireless router is secure WPA2. And with random user name and very long password for login. And stuff like that. It's just my paranoia kind of. Don't know if it's true. Unless someone can shed some light on it.


Anyways, I wanted to buy a cable modem with an extra ethernet port. Not just one, but they appear to be expensive. I'm still doing research, mind you.
I found sbg6400, but that's +$120. Not the kind of range that I really want to spend my money on.
So I can buy a cheaper cable modem with only one ethernet port, or I can find a cheaper 2 ethernet port router. Not sure what to do, if anyone has recommendations on the cable modem to buy?
Or is it perfectly alright to just have my wireless router run through my wired router? If anyone has any advice or recommendations. Please let me know.

Now what? I still want to back up my folder and files with the correct dates. Although Ubuntu did it, Windows 7 is indicating the wrong dates on the files.

I guess chkdsk is only left. But if there is nothing wrong with the MBR. I wonder why it wont open the directory.

Maybe I should run SFC in windows startup repair. Instead of OS.

Hi, I saw your lengthy post that you could try sfc /scannow. This command will fix most of the things. Allow it to run one or two times up to 100 percent. Then check whether you continue to receive the alert of integrity.If there is integrity problem this command will try to fix it automatically.
                          Check the cbs.log to verify what are those files that could not be fixed. It will not allow you to open cbs.log file. YOu just have to open the notepad as admin to open this log. This log will be long and you have to see the missing or corrupted files. The windows will try to fix itself with the installation folder files or the files in store. If both could not be done, and still you get the integrity problem, then i would advise repair installation as you have already copied all the files except this folder.
If you use this command, then it will show the corrupted files in cbs.log
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
This should be typed in command prompt.if some files are missing either copy the same from the same version computer or from the instllation dvd by copying those files to the same directory in the installation folder

Hi I was able to boot up a linux live cd support disk. (Ubuntu) And I got access to the folder easily. It copied all of the files and folders with no problem. No input output errors.
Also the number of bad sectors only adds up to 38mb if I'm correct. So it makes sense the data wasn't really corrupt.

*I will try sfc /scannow next. And report an update.

Hi, There is one more thing. To easily check whether your hdd is in good condition or not, Pl try this.
To check your Hard Disk Health natively, open a command prompt window. First type wmic and hit Enter. Then type diskdrive get status and hit Enter. If you get ok message, then it means that hdd is not failing.

I never knew about that thanks. I don't get an "okay message" But it is listing the hard drive in question with information. I haven't done a SMART test with the hard drive yet. As I want to back up the data. I think I have most of it.

HD is failing (bad sectors) (probably), I have recovered all data except one folder (location is corrupt) and not readable.

Here is the story:
For a while I was getting blue screens, with various errors, that led me to believe my hard drive was failing, as not booting up at times, as well. So instead of just backing up my data first (which I should have done) I wanted to confirm that the hard drive was indeed failing. Or confirm my suspicion that the blue screens are coming up because of bad sectors.

So I ran a dos boot up cd (to check all the sectors, I got a lot of bad ones 133660 out of 78175679). After it was done, I reset my computer. And I get a strange message by Windows that there is an I/O error. Can't remember the exact message. 2nd time it said disk read error. It didn't boot up the hard drive.


So I turned the computer off for a while. And I decided to hook up another secondary hard drive (So I can get my data off of my primary hard drive). I started up my computer.

It loaded Windows 7. It started up. Then I backed up most of my data onto a secondary hard drive.

There is just one folder that I couldn't back up.  ---->*The importance of this data is sort of important. But there are videos that I downloaded from the internet, funny ones. Still, I kind of want it.



Another thing, every time I restart the computer, Windows tries to do an integrity check on the hard drive before it loads Windows. I keep canceling, as in fear it might screw something up.

Also researching the error "Location is not available, The file or directory is corrupted an unreadable" I read some things to do, that I'm unsure of.



So what is the best course of action here?  To recover the folder? Should I run a /chkdsk ? <---

Microsoft says  " This behavior can occur if the file, folder or file system index (Master File Table [MFT] or File Allocation Table [FAT]) is damaged. "

But also warns data can be lost. So that is a risk. If I use boot cd,  data recovery tools that is a risk as well.




My hard drive is 37GB. The folder properties does come up as 5.88 GB.

Alright, I ran "inSSIDer" not sure what I was looking for. My wireless network diagnostic skills aren't that great since I never used one.
But his Wireless network has security: WPA2-Personal. On channel 6. Does that mean any other networks in the neighborhood can't have his channel and that means a confliction?

Anyways, I ran those two commands you told me to do. And rebooted. Still the same issue.

Then after that I updated his wireless network adapter driver (seemed outdated comparing versions in device manager to manufacturers). Then his Lan adapter network driver I updated directly through device manager.

Then I disabled TCP/IP V6. Then I did a restart

And no lag for him so far (playing music in vlc player, etc), even with the internet working. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this has worked. Not sure what the problem was or what was fixed. But I hope it's fixed. This seems to be solved for now. But just to be sure. I'll just wait on it. And report in about it if there still is a problem. If you guys have any other useful information I have missed. Let me know.

This still baffles me on what the problem was. His own connection messing with his laptop with programs that don't require internet connection. Unless network activity going through his internet some how stalls or interferes with how his software and hardware runs.

Not sure either. But disabling his wireless seems to fix the issue. I asked him to do that a couple of times. Just to make sure that was it. It seems like that is what is reproducing the problem. The problem itself started happening 2 weeks ago when he got a new ISP (not too long after).

It could very well be a problem with some network drivers, network software, or anything network related installed too. That's another thing came into my mind as well, is his wireless internet connection secure?

Because if the problem happens with all the 3rd party programs not running then we can count those out as the problem. If doing a clean boot keeps it from happening then we know it is one of those programs.

Okay did clean, boot. By disabling all 3rd party programs except microsoft. It's still doing it. Now what. It's a microsoft program doing it? Or is it a hardware issue with the laptop?

Also, I made sure he disabled chrome.exe before he did the test. He also says it happens in mpc.exe.

Going to have him make a video with his cell phone of what exactly this lag looks like when he is playing the video. I have never seen it when I team viewed in.



Also, he ran combofix finally and did that before we did the clean boot test. It did it's thing and showed a log.

question is why would it work in team viewer , but not work properly if team viewer is not being used. Why is it when I'm viewing it through team viewer it works?

Then I told him to disconnect wireless (he disconnected it through network and sharing) . And he played the video.
And he says its working without lag. Cant fricken believe it. Now how do I fix the problem. Now that I got it isolated to something with the internet enabled. Or internet related.

What to do next, maybe he should try a wifi spot some where to see if it lags there. To see if it's just his wireless connection. Or any internet connection.

I don't think this is normal at all. He has 800,000 on a tab on chrome.exe on a youtube video he says is lagging.
I watch the same video, and I'm at like 9,000 between 10,000 for the whole firefox.exe

I'm not too familiar on these numbers and how it works with the hard drive although. So I ask your opinion.

Maybe I'm monitoring the wrong thing when the lag occurs. Don't know. There is a lot of other columns in the processor page columns in task manger. Still want to monitor the Total bytes/sec in resource monitor. Seems more accurate for disk usage.

I followed some suggestions here. But I wanted to follow Shane's suggestion. But Resource monitor is just a glitched out window on his computer. For some reason. It will just show title, file menu and that's it.  I close the program. Reload it, and it's the same thing.

I need another tool to monitor disk usage. I could have him try it in safe mode, although, but then I don't think we can do the test of him watching videos.


update: I enabled I/O writes in the task manager. And watched for it again. And once again he said it wasn't lagging. So I told him next time to have task manager enabled so if it does it again, he can screenshot the program that is doing it.

It sees when I'm watching him in teamviewer it doesnt do it.

I got rid of said suspicious skype updater or plugin crap as well. looked like a trojan.

Ran process explorer through virustotal.com, all of them said to be clean, and the ones that weren't said can't find file. I didn't run AdwCleaner, because virustotal found 3 things on it, and chrome said it was bad. Not sure if it's false positive but probably is. I ordered him to use combofix now that I got rid of his silly version of spybot. So spybot shouldn't bother combo fix anymore.

Not sure what the deal is with Resource monitor and why it's glitchy.

I did disk checker again, everything said it was fine with no bad sectors. But I still should run smart test.

He says the problem is still occurring, but not when I viewed his computer in team viewer before everything was working fine for him surprisingly. So I'm kind of confused.

This was after I told him to shut down his computer for 30 mins. Needed a reboot anyways.

So this is what he told me later on:

Alright thanks for the link to hitmanpro.alert to remove buster browser. Because malwarebytes didn't detect it apparently.
No idea process explorer had that feature to work with virus total.

I might have him check on those other things you mentioned then later too. As well as combofix if he didn't already. He'll probably see the post also.

Maybe it was a certain process I closed in the background which is why I got it to work without lag. When i did it in teamviewer. My only theory.

But before I did close more unneeded processes, I wanted to see the problem for myself first. Only first thing I did was close all instances of chrome.exe down. Can't remember what I closed when I did the first test.  But that worked.

I don't really get that with spybot (it's a simple program). Because when he used it, it seemed totally different from mine. Like it was a live protection program. Mine just stays installed and doesn't run in the background. Very simple to use, not cpu tasking. But if it's not great at finding things. Then okay.

Yeah, I think he does have to get rid of chrome. This is getting ridiculous, he told me he used it because he liked a certain feature that you can sync all of his web page history with google + or profile or whatever it was called. I don't think the risk is worth the reward.

Yeah, I will have him run combofix and malwarebytes then. Or when he sees this he will run them.

Alright, I told him to come here. I talk to this guy on skype. I did a couple of things with him.

Issue mainly was that spotifier (music streamer) was lagging like every 10 seconds. So I remoted in team viewer. I closed chrome.exe, since he had a lot of tabs open. And it seems to take up a lot of memory, even though he had memory free. So it should work right. But I closed it. He said the music didn't lag, after I closed chrome. Or since I team viewed in and he played a song.

Spotifier helper.exe was running like what 3 in the background. So I closed those programs down. In fact deleted the exe in the folder of the program. backed it up just in case. Disabled it in the registry. Seemed quite useless and annoying.

He was running two anti virus programs Avast and Microsoft security essentials. Both had live protection turned on. I figured he should just have only one.  So he choose Avast, and I uninstalled MSE. Then I configured some stuff in Avast, such as not scanning while the disk is running. Not sure what that was. Maybe that was causing the problem. Avast doesnt take much ram.

He also said Mpc.exe never had a problem when running music or videos. So maybe it's tied to that specific application. Anyways after doing some stuff, ending tasks.

I loaded up chrome. had about  20 tabs, and the lag seemed to go away on spotifier, we tried a youtube video. Lag went away. He hasn't tried a game yet.  It was using about 4 gb of ram out of 6 gb. But no lag with video streaming.

Did disk check by the way. That went okay. Tried to have him run SMART test, but that wasn't so easy since the program we used wasn't working right.  I might have him use a dos boot disk to make sure everything is okay. Checked event viewer, didn't see disk errors anyways. The program I tried was fjdtwin.exe from storage toshiba's website. His disk drive is : Toshiba MK7575GSX . So it's hard to find diagonstic tools on that.

Thought it could be over heated, the temps weren't too bad for a laptop.

One thing that concerns me is a program called

G Buster browser defense

I researched it, it could be a trojan or be a use. Lots of complaints about it. Tried to remove it, but moveonboot wouldn't load. But I did disable it in services.
Tried to kill it in task manager, and process explorer. But it renables. So it's probably something has to be done in safe mode to get rid of.


That's sort of it for now. It's running fine, he might want to run combofix. I tried to disable avast, but that probably needs to be done in safe mode. combofix maybe needed to run in safe mode. Combofix just warns about avast, possibly all I needed to do was disable it rather than ending the exe and it would have worked.

He did run spybotsearch and destroy and restarted. I think he ran a few others.


My main concern is chrome. It seems like it uses way more ram then firefox. Don't know what he is going to do with that. Even though he has enough ram freed up Is it necessary to use so much? I just don't know. It's annoying to figure out how much ram it's using. Because you have to actually total up the ram on each exe you are using per tab. And some are over 100mb of ram each or 80mb of ram. I guess that's how it's programmed

The main issue is spotify and youtube. And chrome.exe at least from what I can tell.

He thinks the problem might still occur. Is there any other advice that would be nice.

Obviously laptops aren't workhorses like desktop, but his is a gaming one. Even then I know it's not a workhorse compared to desktops.

Again he just wants this documented. And he hasn't fully cleansed his computer from bunch of stuff in the background.
Maybe he still has to run some stuff. Any advice is appreciated. I just don't care for chrome.exe. Any of you guys used it? Or have any advice. Perhaps he has to get rid of chrome plugins as well.

Yeah, a version of mpc comes with the CCCP pack. And I do recommend you get it from the link I pasted. I recommend anything you download that you run a antivirus scan on virustotal.com before installing. That includes before installing apps that are supposedly running for surveys to make money. They are more than likely malware, designed to intrude on your privacy. Did you actually get $200, it's probably a scam, very dangerous and risky. If you have the original .exe that installed it this application. You can take that .exe and load it on virustotal.com. And paste results here.

Did you try MalwareBytes in safe mode like Boggin recommended? And you can always disable your antivirus to run combofix. I always use different combinations of anti virus to look for malware. So I strongly recommend you try whatever it takes to get them to run. Also minimize your background programs when you run these programs. Close anything down, web browser, practically everything you don't need. I would kind of like to see a screenshot of all the processes you are running. Bring up task manager, and click "Show all process from users". And press the print screen button. Paste in paint, save it as png. And attach it here.

 I wouldn't say that anti virus programs when uninstalled leave traces. Maybe Shane can correct me if I'm wrong. But they are suppose to uninstall all traces it and even from the registry. If they anti virus is a reputable software, they won't do that. I heard horror stories about McAfee not uninstalling, although.

By the way, I didn't catch what antivirus you are using for your main protection?
Do you use a firewall, by the way?

Hi, I have a suggestion for you. I know it's not a solution to your real problem. You can still try to fix that.

But I update my windows through this method:
I use two programs, Auto Patcher.exe, and Apup.exe

One (Apup.exe) will let you choose which updates to download from microsoft, such as non critical and critical depending on your operating system. And the other one (Autopatcher.exe) (offline updater) will load all the files downloaded, and check the ones you have already installed and the ones you don't will be unchecked. And you can choose what you want to update and it will install them one by one automatically. It's third party tools. So it's up to you. I like to do things manually.

I could understand people not wanting to trust third party tools. And they just want to do it with Microsoft updates, so it's just a suggestion.

I already scanned the programs used with virustotal.com to make sure they aren't trojans or viruses.  You can check on it.

Note: You need Windows update service enabled for it to work

Auto Patcher had 1/51 ratio detection on virus total, which I believe was a false positive.

Apup had 3/51 ratio detection on virus total, which had 3 false positive generic detections I believe from some random un-reputable anti virus programs.

I couldn't find the external filters you mentioned scarsxp. The LAV audio and video decoder and Haali media splitter. There were a bunch of others including Real Player and Quicktime. After restarting again to force Malwarebytes to quit, everything seems mostly back to normal. For some reason I couldn't make Malwarebytes quit in the task manager, it was stuck or something. I wonder what other External Filters would help in MPC to view the videos. I do have Firefox, by the way and have had issues with that also at times, so I don't really use it.

Did you install CCCP? Those have the decoders (filters) needed to run codecs.  It has Haali Media Splitter, And Lav audio and video decoders.

That helped. I guess I have to decide about downloading combofix and the other programs or not. After the issues with Malwarebytes just now, not sure what I want to do.

Yes, malwarebytes is probably over bloated and a irritating program to use. Which is why I uninstall it after I run a scan.

Spybot search and destroy is a less irritating program, that I just leave installed. And every time I want to I can update it, run the scan, see if it finds anything. That's it. Spybot is very, very quick.

And it never hurts to be thorough, that's why I run more than one sometimes. I never ran combofix myself. It's up to you.

Alright, latest update, I decided to run Malwarebytes again and it first needed to update, then while scanning it found alot of things, but alot if not all came after installing MPC, community Codec and this Optimizer Pro which I did not authorize, but I think that snuck in on one of the others downloads.

I am using Internet Explorer 9. I know it's outdated, but hate installing new versions of something and then have more problems. As far as chkdsk is concerned I never ran it,I did the check to see if it needed to be done.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I hate updating programs also. But a browser is very important. And that could be the root cause of most infections. I don't trust internet explorer 9, and would strongly recommend against it. Firefox you can get a lot more security. And you can get ad block plus.

Try to get combofix to work if you want then also.

I also would recommend spybot search and destroy. Install it and update it, and then run it. It doesn't run in the background, it's not intrusive. It's simple and easy to use. And it usually doesn't annoy you with restarts. Unless you are removing some registry keys.

Some of the video files were WMV files and I tried changing a few to MPC files, but did not help. Some are AVI files, Flash and some are MPEG files. Some say Movie Clip. I had installed a program called DivX some time ago when Windows Media Player had problems, so a few show that icon and are DivX files and some have that icon but say AVI file. A few videos are Quicktime type. I do have Real Player and Quicktime installed by the way. That's quite a number of file types I know, but it's years of videos.

Yeah, it's time to get this organized. You can start uninstalling those players if you wish, when you get MPC to work.
Media player classic should be able to run wmv video files if I recall. And most of the files you are talking about.
Do some research on that.
Also open up mpc-hc
and go to view > options > External filters.
Add filter , add LAV Audio decoder, add LAV Video decoder, add Haali Media Splitter.
After you added them. Click on each one and select "prefer" on the right. And make sure they are all check marked. Click okay.

I installed MPC and combined community codec and still some video files would not load. It would say can't render the file. I looked into virustotal and it checks files 64 MB or smaller, so I am not sure how it can scan Itunes. I have Many GB of music files, so that take a long while. There was an option to download something that would make it easier to check the files, but I didn't do that at least not yet. I had trouble trying to download Combofix, including ads popping up and when it was going to download I had to click on something that said if it doesn't start downloading automatically, click here. Then when it was installing it had an error about the integrity of something and would not install. Of course in between all of this my Avast Antivirus was saying, threat detected often enough and I had to allow the combofix program to start installing, because Avast said it's not a normally used file. In the end it wouldn't install because of what I said above. I did run across another program that downloaded with MPC, called PC utilities pro-Optimizer Pro. Anyone heard of it. It scanned my computer and found alot of stuff wrong including registry entries to clean and all sorts of other things that seem possible. Of course it's not free, but when I was leaving their page they offered me 50% off to buy the program. It would be $15. Not sure I should do it or not.

When I said scan itunes, I just meant scan the .exe file that actually installs the program. I do that with any new programs I install. You can use itunes if it's safe.

Hmm to run combofix, maybe you need to temporarily disable Avast. Some anti virus programs don't like it when you install other ones.

I use MPC-HC version 1.7.4. It should come with the community codec pack already. Also what web browser are you using?
 If you have firefox, you can download ad block plus. If you don't like advertisements. And that will also help protect you against malware.

What video files are these you are trying to run? What extension do they have? Maybe they are quicktime videos or real media videos. Which don't automatically work with media player classic (if I recall) without installing the filters.


Pro-Optimizer Pro = not sure of the integrity on registry cleaners. Some apps like to fake people, by indicating they have problems with their registry. When they don't really have any problems at all. I would stay away from that.


Back to your original problem in hand. It might not be bad a idea to check on hardware. Run a chkdsk, not sure what the deal is with
Windows Repair v2.8.5. You might still want to run it.

To see if data is getting corrupt. I would like to see the results to that. It just seems hardware related at this point.

Then check your memory, with memtest86 and run that on restart with a boot up disc. Maybe checking each stick of ram individually. Most memory problems are found on the first pass.

Or just use windows 8.1's memory diagnostics, it will ask you to restart now or later to run the check. Should be in the administrator tools. But memtest86 is better.

Wow, thank you for the incredible insight. It probably would have been safe anyways. But I fixed the problem. Not on newegg. I'll check that out later. But another online store I was dealing with.

I inspected the element with a different web browser and Opera revealed what image that was insecure from http that should be https. Apparently it was there logo.

So I used firefox and told it to block all images from the website. And what do you know, now it says the paypal is secure at login. So now I know that everything is encrypted.

About the addons to firefox, I get paranoid as well about them. I just try to get them from mozilla firefox's website, because they do integrity checks before they release it on their website. And I don't think I can scan an addon with my own anti virus.
