General Computer Support / Still a "Not Genuine" problem
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:44:34 pm »
Ok, I've tried everything suggested on this forum for my Windows Not Genuine issue several times.  I get the message activation succeeded in one or another after every run.  The error message returns within seconds.

I've run slui.exe with both the 3 and 4 parameter with success every time but no fix.

Microsoft help looped me around in circle and finally insisted that I talk to the team that built my computer.  What you may not know is that unless you have a product key from something bought at retail or directly from Microsoft they will wash their hands of your problems and tell you that the computer manufacturer is responsible.  In my case the manufacturer went to great lengths to help but eventually ran out of idea.

I am trying one more time here before telling Microsoft what I think.  Very politely of course.

Any additional ideas will be very welcome.

General Computer Support / Not genuine windows message
« on: February 19, 2015, 09:32:00 am »
Hi Shane.  Your previous help with my weird permissions problem worked and appears to be still working but I have a new problem.

Roughly since November I have been getting a "This is Not Genuine Windows" notice very often during all sessions in all applications.  The link in that message to an online fix does not work.  I suspect that it brings up slui.exe with parameters 3 or 4 from the CMD system.  I've run both of those directly and each time the system says my Win 7 is activated and Microsoft pure once again.  The not genuine message comes back right away.

As far as I can tell from the web this is a bad download issue but I cannot find the specific download talked about and a restore to before the date of the suspected bad software had no effect on the problem.

Talking to Microsoft about this was beyond frustrating and useless.  The crew that built my computer went all out to help but they could not deal with it either.

I have the disk to reinstall Windows but that means redoing a lot of work and it is a last resort as far as I am concerned.  I also don't really know if it will work.

Any ideas about this one?  I saw the posts about switching DNS connections but I don't know if that is what is wrong.

Many thanks.

General Computer Support / Temp and Log Files Choking Computer
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:36:45 pm »
I had a lot of help with a previous problem from Shane for which I am very thankful.  Now an old annoyance is becoming a serious problem.

Win 7 Professional 64Bit platform kept updated until the last few weeks.

Within a few minutes of working with the computer is starts to slow down to a crawl.  If I look at the log files with Ccleaner from piriform.com I find the temp and log files have expanded.  The total has reached 30 Megs or more at times.  The crawl starts with as small as 5 meg total.

I have the sizes for these files set to low values but the system generates hundreds of them at a time and overall they choke things out.  This is spite of having a large amount of RAM a SSD C: drive and a large D: drive.

Sometimes trying to fix this kills Outlook and I have to retreat to an earlier restore point which works for the Outlook problem.  This is why update is useless for the moment.

The Microsoft site gives instructions on setting the file sizes but nothing I can find about the multiple file issue I am having.

All ideas welcome.

Immediately after running the Tweaking software Outlook would not load.  Access denied message about Outlook.pst even though I am the administrator with full power.  See posts on Bleeping Computer under Littlefrog user name.  Also the used space on C: doubled and has increased again recently.  There is very little left free.  Ran chkdsk with /f and /r switches per Shane's suggestions.  Some repairs and fixes noted but the access issue remains.  It is not Outlook since I have it running with a new pst file.  I tried to import the old one into the new one but the access issue was still present.  The Belkin router monitor will not load.  There is something wrong with Windows 7 64 bit Installer.

The OUtlook issue is the critical one and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Shane fixed this with the most amazing display of computer skills I've ever encountered.  I won't tell you about the entire episode because I don't know how it relates to anything resembling a normal session for him and it would be unfair to raise expectations for anyone else.  It was not his program but rather a cauldron of permission and VC runtime cross talk interactions and what I would call loops on my computer.   I do not understand more than a tiny fraction of the issues, the fixes and his process but there were fixes and the computer is not only working but working better than it has in a long time.    There is not enough space here to express my appreciation for what he did nor enough stars on some evaluation widget. Just know it is very high.

Thank you Shane.
