In my Windows XP PC, recently AVAST free version has mistakenly detected and deleted the following four files:
windows\system32\drvers\
ELhid.sys
ELkbd.sys
ELmon.sys
ELmou.sys
after restart, the mouse does not work any more (it has an exclamation mark on the hardware manager) and the "human interface device" also appears not to be working any more.
In a Forum I found that other people had the same issue, but they solve it by goign to the last restore point.
In my case, restore was temporarily disabled...
If I have to re-install Windows, it will take me weeks to set up everything again.
I have tried windows repair, but does not seem to fix the issue...
What can I do?
Please help.

Are you sure that the files have been deleted? Or are they in the Virus Chest? If the latter then they can be recovered. Similar problem to yours here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=111615.0

Looks like those files belong to Intel® Quick Resume Technology. Your system doesn't need these installed and looks like it attaches itself to the hardware in the system.
You shouldn't need to do a reinstall. You can go to the control panel and uninstall Intel® Quick Resume Technology or restore the removed files from the avast chest. OF course the only trick is how to do this if your keyboard and mouse wont respond
You could boot off of a ubuntu live Linux cd to get access to the files and move the files back to the drivers folder manually as well.

thanks a lot
The mouse does not respond, but luckily, for some reason, the keyboard is OK. I'll try to unistall the Quick Resume.

I have unistalled Quick Resume, and now the mouse works again! Thanks a lot for this.
The PC is now perfectly useable. Actually, there is the secondary issue that the device manager now shows one unrecognized device, and XP is unable to install/update the driver automatically.
Maybe the issue is related to the fact that the Quick Resume driver is now missing (this PC has a VIIV capability).
Do you know what should I do to find the driver?
I guess what I need is the Intel® Quick Resume Technology Driver for P5LP-LE Asus motherboard, but I cannot find it on the Intel web site nor the Asus web site, nor the HP web site... Any ideas?

Is your computer store bought or custom built?
If it is store bought what model is it?

The PC is a store bought HP Pavillion A1659.IT
the original OS is a Win XP Media Center [Italian]
the original OS, for some reason is horribly slow and unstable, so I have installed since years ago a second boot:
the OS I normally use is a Win XP Home [Japanese]
the original support page for this PC is:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-49031-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=3315910&sw_lang=
after fixing the PC yesterday I have downloaded and installed the Intel chipset drivers from this link, but for some reason the VIIV feature does not get re-installed.

Try these

Also you can see here what it is used for and if you want to reinstall them

tried to install the Softpedia driver, but unluckily I get an "unsupported Operating System" error.
Anyway thanks a lot for your help. At least now I can use the PC, and only get a warning when booting XP.
