Title: startup trouble
Post by: peterr on September 30, 2012, 06:21:42 am
Hello
I booted up and the backup at log on seemed to be not working right and said something about falling back .
It seems as though a backup occured when I look in backup and under regbak but I had two questions.
1-What could I do to prevent  this from occuring again?
2-If I did a restore, would a full restoration of all of the registry  take place in as much as if it functioned properly?
Thank you

The fallback method happens if the VSS fails or doesnt respond in 60 sec.

The fallback method backs up the registry with the Windows API like Erunt does instead of the VSS. SO the backup should still be happening.

Can you post the vss log from the backup?

When or if this happens again, if you tell me how to do that, I will.
This time, I deleted the backup and made a manual one.
I have it set to backup once per day at log on so please tell me how to post the  vss log.
I checked windows explorer and the original backup was there until I deleted it.
I thought for good recovery, the best thing to do was to remove the old and perform a new.

I have Win 7 but the default is for Vista.
Should we leave it as is or change it to Win 7?
I am still looking for the text file.
Thank you

I think you can leave it as it is!

If you want to find the log file, open "Registry Backup", select the tab "Restore Registry". In "Select Backup To Restore" choose the date that you want.  Then click on " Open Current Backup Location". There you will find 3 textfiles, but "Log_Vss.txt" is the one you are searching for.

HI Thomas
Thank you for your help.
First, I will leave the default as it is,Vista, although i have Win 7.

Secondly, now I know what Shane meant by log file.

If I had kept that particular backup, I would have had a text file to produce. Because it did not work as it usually does, I deleted it and performed a manual backup before realizing I could have taken a prntscrn of the text file.

Your driections were much appreciated as we low level users do not intuitively know what terms mean and where things are found. We need to be fed pablum like babies. :shy:

You shouldn't be worried, because next time you will know what to attach if your problem happens again.
During the creation of a post there is a browse button to attach your vss log file, just in case.
