Title: Windows 8.1 updates.
Post by: chasborg on April 29, 2015, 04:55:55 pm
I can't get windows 8.1 to update. All I get is a blank screen. I tried running repairs but repair #10 won't work. That's the one that says "Remove policies set by infections". I tried running in safe mode but that didn't help. Is there a way to get it to work?

If WUs fail completely, there are a couple of commands you can try but some have had problems in Win 8.1 with just a couple of them.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) http://www.howtogeek.com/194041/how-to-open-the-command-prompt-as-administrator-in-windows-8.1/ and enter -

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentstore

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow
to see what that reports.

exit to close the command window.

If they come up clean then reboot and try Windows Update again.

What did the /restorehealth and sfc /scannow report ?

Are you getting any error codes when the WUs fail ?

Windows has its own WU troubleshooter and for Win 8/8.1 you can access it by pressing the Windows key+w - type troubleshoot then click on Troubleshooting.

Under System and Security click on Fix problems with Windows Update - click on the Advanced button - as the box for auto repair should already be checked, click on Run as administrator.

You may be prompted to restart if it has effected any repairs.

You can also reset Windows Updates with this MS Fix it https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

On re-reading your first post and the resultant blank screen, more info could be derived from Event Viewer https://www.winhelp.us/event-viewer-in-windows.html

Look for any Errors with the same date and time stamp when the updates failed.

You can paste any into the Reply box by clicking on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then place the cursor in the Reply box, right click and select Paste.

You ran all the repairs in safe mode but it gets stuck at repair 10? That is odd, repair 10 is just a reg file and should go very quick.

Can you give me more details of what happens when you try the repair?
