i'd like your opinion on what may be happening here......

Since it doesnt show a error number or any more info there is no way to tell what the problem is.
I know from your other post that you used my Windows Repair program, did you make sure to run all the repairs? And can you get a screen shot of the actual error message from Windows updates?

there is not a particular error message number, just the balloon that windows cannot check for updates.
the windows update screen says never been updated, the windows installed updates shows 387 installed updates.
it seems like the link between the 2 things is gone.
any ideas for me.

Run Windows Repair All In One with (at least) "Repair Windows Update" ticked.

ran the repair for windows update (only), no change, the problem persists
here is the log file created. perhaps you can determine
my next step from it's content, i do not know what it is telling me.

Go to C:\Windows\Winsxs
LOTS of folders here, scroll all the way to the bottom to where you will see a few files. What files do you have there?

See if you can delete all those xml files.
