My applauncher, the only gadget I use from the 8gadget pack was running fine on Win 8 Pro x86 but some setting is not allowing installation of sidebar files.
-
Do you get any type of error message when you try to install it?
Shane
-
Empty gadget -just-the-background and a momentary error "stopped installation of sidebar files." I tried to find the error in the app event viewer, no luck.
-
And when you tried to install it you right clicked on it and choose run as administrator correct?
What is the link to the program and I will check it out and see if I can find where it is wanting to install the files to :-)
Shane
-
It did not give me the option of installing it as Admin.
-
Running it as admin makes no difference
-
App is in Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe
-
I forgot I have that same run running on my system as well :-)
Close the sidebar.exe and then go to the exe itself and right click on it and choose run as administrator and let me know if that helps.
Also make sure the gadgets are in that folder as well
Shane
-
No change. This is what I get trying to run gadget.exe as admin:
-
If you click on the add gadget, have it add some more and see if any of those work and let me know
Shane
-
It all goes to the blank background, does not add anything
-
Post a screen shot of the contents in the folder C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
And also tell me the size of the folder.
Shane
-
Also I checked on my system and in order to get my added sidebar gadgets I had to install them into a different location under my profile
"C:\Users\Shane\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets"
Check your folder there and make sure your gadget is in there.

I have installed under Users AND in Program Files. Is the double installation the problem?
-
and TWO settings.ini files!
-
OK I double checked and I dont have your version installed, I installed the one from here
http://gadgetsrevived.com/download-sidebar/
Uninstall the one you have now (You may need to reboot before installing the new one) and see how the one I use works for you. I use it on my current Windows 8.1 system.

I uninstalled, rebooted and installed the version from your link --the same empty background, no gadgets. I hated the Win 8 tile deal so I installed StarDock START8 which gave my Start button back and the Win 7 desktop under Win 8. Is it possible that THAT is preventing the sidebar with the gadgets? On the other hand it was all working before I ran your cleaner...
-
My tool isn't a cleaner :-)
It doesn't clean anything out of the system, it just run bat files to repair things in Windows, which 95% is in the registry.
For my start menu I tried stardock and found that it had performance issues. So I moved to classic shell and it has been perfect so far.
http://www.classicshell.net/
Of course on my system I also have the UAC disabled, and not just disabled in the control panel as that doesn't actually disable it in Windows 8, it just stops Windows from asking to allow which caused a lot of problems. So I used the reg key to disable the UAC totally, which means I cant use the app store which is fine since I dont. After that all my programs have ran great.
Do you have the UAC turned all the way down in the control panel? If so try turning it back to default. Then it will start asking you again for permissions instead of auto blocking and not asking.
From what I can tell it is like the sidebar doesnt have permissions to look at the gadget folder.
Shane
-
There is NOTHING in the appLauncher folder!
-
You uninstalled the other gadget pack.
What we need to do is start fresh. Uninstall what ever sidebar you have installed now.
Then delete (Or rename in case you need them later) the Windows Sidebar folder under program files and the sidebar folder under your profile. This way all folders and settings files are out of the way. Then install one of the sidebar programs fresh.
New folders will be made and settings file. Lets see how that does :-)
Shane
-
Uninstalled, no Win Sidebar folders, re-installed, it shown in control pnl but it looks the same, now I cannot get anything, no empty background, nothing happens when I try to execute sidebar.exe, there is no gadgets shortcut, nothing in the start menu...
-
You didnt tell me what you have the UAC set to.
The msi file needs admin rights to run, and you dont get a right click option to run it as administrator, so we have to make sure Windows is asking you to allow the mis to have admin rights.
So if you have the UAC turned all the way down then it wont ask you for permissions and will just block it. What is your UAC currently set at?
Shane
-
UAC is set to medium
-
OK good :-)
Now when you run the msi setup file does Windows come up and ask for permission to run it?
Shane
-
The downloaded zip deflated as an exe. I do not see an msi
-
UAC asked for permission to run the EXE
-
OK good, make sure to extra the exe file first completely. Then right click on the exe and choose run as administrator. :-) (I want to cover all bases)
Shane
-
It shows as installed in CTRL PNL, I typed gadgets in Start, I get the same empty background as before
-
OK, check the security of the two folder locations and let me know what they are
Shane
-
Security is set to "Everyone" I created a gadgets shortcut on the desktop and changed its security to everyone ---nothing yet
-
And in the appdata folder section as well?
Shane
-
Yes, I just changed it to everyone --- no gadgets
-
What was the permissions before you changed it?
Shane
-
it was for my user name
-
What about administrator and system?
Shane
-
Those were the 3 permissions, I added everyone, which is what your utility added to everything - a lifesaver for my week-long struggle to install Adobe CS6 on my system!
-
Then it must not be a permissions problem.
If we just had some sort of error to work with it would help a ton lol
I wonder what runtime files the sidebar needs, like .net or something.
Shane
-
OK, we sleep on it, see if inspiration will flower in the morning. At any rate I am very tired from conducting a complicated concert yesterday (MozartOrchestra.org) on little sleep. Thanks Shane for your good-will and your devotion!
-
No problem :-)
Been working on Windows Repair v2.5.0 for the last 12 hours so I have been here to answer your posts as soon as you post them lol
