All In One Repair 1.9.10
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:34:07 pm »
Hi Shane

When running the new version it is stalling again, i ended up turning it off hanging for over half an hour.

It was stalling on RESET FILE PERMISSIONS or RESET REGISTRY PERMISSIONS.

Which XP disc do i need to run the SFC?

How many discs should come with XP?

Thanks again

Take a look at my tips page
http://www.tweaking.com/articles/pages/windows_repair_all_in_one_tips,1.html

Quote
Important Info on Reset Registry Permissions & Reset File Permissions
Both of these repairs will take a little bit to complete, depending on the speed of the system, the number of files and the number of reg keys. On a few systems it is possible for these repairs to get stuck in an infinite loop and thus never complete. This is because of symbolic links http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link

Symbolic links are a way for a folder or reg key to point to a different location. On a normal system this isn't a problem. But if a system has a bad link that points back to a parent path then everything it hits in that link it will hit it again and again forever.

Example:
C:\Test\Test1\Test2
Test2 has a symbolic link that points back to C:\Test, and now we are stuck in an infinite loop since the repairs do all sub folders and sub keys and will keep hitting Test2.

If the repairs are running for a insane amount of time then they are most likely stuck in a loop. If that is the case stop the repairs and skip them.

With XP you need to CD you installed with. Thankfully MS fixed it in new versions of Windows where you dont ever need he cd.

And XP will be on just 1 cd :-)

Hi Shane thank you

Sometimes (generally first time i run it) it goes through fine although slow.

Should the All In One Repair only be run once or can it be run as many times as i like?

The two XP cds i have are DRIVER RECOVERY & OPERATING SYSTEM which one should i use for the SFC?

Also where would i find it on the cd?

Thanks again

You only need to run the repair tool when you think something is broken. It isnt a maintenance program, it is a repair tool. So only run it when you need it ;-)

As for the CD the one that says "OPERATING SYSTEM" should be it. Just pop it in the drive when SFC asks for it.

Hi Shane

SFC doesn't ask for the disc, just comes up with a box saying VERIFYING WINDOWS PROTECTED FILES ARE INTACT etc.

It is XP so i don't understand.

Thank you

Hi, The box you mention is the action taken on scannow command given by Shane. It will check and report it if any thing is not there. If i try to bold the fonts, it gives b and b. How to activate this sir.
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

If the i386 folder form the cd is on the drive then the sfc wont ask for the cd, some store bought machines had the folder on the drive so users wouldnt need the cd

If sfc doesnt ask for the cd then I wouldnt worry. At the same time it may not be asking for the cd because it doesnt need to replace any files.

Hi Shane

Thank you

I looked up Program files and found i386.

I did a Virus scan with Glarysoft Utility (i hadn't done a scan with Avast or Malware Bytes) and it found a Virus so i deleted that and ran the Repair and this time the log says it took 1.09 hours, alot better than 3 + hours.

I wonder if the other two antiviruses would have picked the virus up.

Would the virus slowed the repair down that much, to the point of stalling sometimes? Maybe it decided to go a bit faster, i will try it next repair to confirm.
The problem has been around for awhile, and i have scanned with the other two since.

Thanks again

I made changes to the 2 slowest repairs which is the reg and file permissions that speeds them up, so that might be the reason for it :-)

Hi Shane thank you

I ran 1.9.10 before using Glarysoft and it stalled again, but after running Glarysoft it went through faster.

Hi, Shane,    Registry repair does repair the infected registry. For academic sake, i ask the following queries
1. Does it repair all the infected by replacing or deleting the unwanted entries or does the repair restore default window registry entries? I am asking this question, for your scan is running , it seems at almost the registry entries, and modifying.
2. I learnt , may be my knowledge is small, that windows registry programs by msoffice also does not replace the other entries, other than seeing the protected files registry entries. The unwanted entries by downloaded programs, even by ccleaner does not erase the malicious entries, the program does during the process of installation. Some hijacks or hack applications. Pl educate
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

The reset reg permissions does the permissions only. Doesn't add or remove keys.

Other repairs will replace some keys that are needed for services. But the program doesnt scan and remove keys from the registry. All the reg keys that the program does add is under the files folder with the program

Hi Shane i have attached a screen shot of the Adware that has appeared again.

Glary picked this up but the Avast and Malewarebytes didn't.

Is this a concern, with the Adware and also has come back?

Its just a regkey, if your not getting any pop ups then you are most likely fine. Also always possible to be a false positive as well

Normally there would be much more than just 1 regkey. I also googled that regkey and found it has been around since 2008 & 2009. So it is an old one.

Also some others say it is part of a toolbar
http://www.systemlookup.com/CLSID/65850-tbHElper_dll.html

At the same time go and delete that key yourself. Reboot and see if it comes back. If it keeps coming back then it is possible you have a rootkit on the system.

The 3 I run are malwarebytes anti rootkit beta, tdsskiller and combofix.exe as a last restore.
