Volume Shadow Copy
« on: February 27, 2013, 08:43:37 am »
I'm running Vista. I tried running a full back up, but getting "Catastrophic Failure 0x8000FFFF, Shadow Copy couldn't be created.". Well almost all of the fixes I have found say to set Volume Shadow Copy to Automatic. Well, I can't find Volume Shadow Copy anywhere on my computer or any of the aliases I fund for it.  I tried Teaking.com's all in one and VSS repair program, but neither helped. I really need help.

OPen a cmd.exe window and you can use vssadmin to view any shadow copies and the writers. Lets see what it gives us :-)

You do a screen shot by hitting the prtscn key on your keyboard, open paint, go to edit and past, then save it as a jpg.

Do these and get a screen shot of each.

I went ahead and ran what you sent. Computer became stuck on configuring an update 3 of 3. Wouldn't repair or just reboot. Had to restore. Now it's say there a problem with the configuration and won't load vista at all. Just tells me to turn off the computer.

That reg file was nothing more than the vss service reg keys. Shouldn't have done anything with updates.

When vista gets stuck at the installing updates 3 of 3 (VERY common bug in Vista) You can fix it by simply deleting one file called pending.xml

Still doing a system restore should have worked as well. Did vista try to install updates when you rebooted?

Are you able to get into safe mode at all? If not go to the recovery console, open a command window and put this in

del C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml

Ok. My computer will not let me go to safe mode, any F8 functions either. Window pops up saying System Configuration Error (Code Purple) & tells me to turn off the computer.

First off, I REALLY appreciate all the help you have given me over the past few days.  I have learned a lot.
Second, System Configuration Error (Code Purple) is a HP bug, whammy etc.. I found a way around it on another site. Here's the fix:
          1. When the System Configuration Error (Code Purple) pops up, hit SHIFT & F10. This pops up an administrator command prompt.
          2. Enter "chdir C:\hp\bin\CheckDMI"
          3. Then enter "rename CheckDMI.cmd CheckDMI"
          4. Enter "dir" to verify that it changed
          5. Reboot system.
I did all this and it worked.  Don't know exactly what the above actually does, but it got me around the Code Purple. As far as I know it only works for Vista.
