Win 7 HP/SP1 Hard Drive constant R/W
« on: December 21, 2012, 02:05:32 pm »
Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP1;

For two (2) days now, the HD LED access annunciator is constantly "ON" or is flashing very rapidly.  According to System Explorer, there is no CPU problem (normal range of usage), System.exe is sporadic and there is very little actual data being read or written to HD.   I have turned-off the Network access to the internet with no change in HD access.  I have turned-off my ASC 5 with A/V Pro scanner with no change in HD access.  I have made sure that Drive Indexing is still off.  I have watched this LED for two and one-half days, now.

Any ideas you might have to locate and/or stop the process which is causing this constant drain on the reaction time of the system would be appreciated!

Use the Windows 7 resource monitor, the disk monitor will show you what is using the drive :-)

Shane, according to my interpretation of the Resource Monitor, System Volume Information PID 4 (System) is causing the most R/W's.  Nothing else seems to cause changes as much as this does.  There's a long list of numbers which are all identical.  Hm?  This wasn't a problem 3 days ago.  Do you have a solution for this anomaly?

Install this program of mine
http://www.pcwintech.com/drive-speedometer

Let me know what kind of read and write speeds are happening when it happens.

Write: ~2.0 MB/s
Read: varying between ~.25 MB/s and 1.5 MB/s

Upon occasion, both will jump mid-scale to roughly 7 - 11 MB/s

The Resource Monitor tells me that the disc is ALWAYS between 90 and 100% usage!

I must leave now, but I'll check back in the morning for additional information if you've got any ideas.  This makes my computer very sluggish, indeed!

Good Morning, Shane!  Well, I turned-off System Restore!  Now, my HD is behaving normally:smiley:  Why would System Restore change its behavior from what was acceptable to constant access of the System Volume Information file?  Are there settings which are adjustable or modifiable?  What would have been the source of those changes?

Gee, it's nice to have a normal speed computer, again!!!!

I really would like to get System Restore working normally, again.

Have a great week end.... :artist:

Not sure what it was doing. MS has very little info on it for some odd reason.

Myself I leave it turned off. I dont want it using the space and I do my own reg backup and backup my own files :-)

Yes, that sounds like a very good idea!  I usually perform a backup prior to installing a major controlling program or ANY new Drivers!!!!

I really feel safer when I also get a Registry Backup using Tweaking Windows Repair.  Good work, my friend and thank you for helping me through this annoyance to a peaceful ending.

Again, Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year!

HoHoHo!

New version of my reg backup came out yesterday.
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/registry_backup.html

It is a program by itself, I added it to the Windows Repair in the files folder. Next update of the Windows repair will have the new reg backup program

Thank you for the Reg. B/U program.  Easy to use, too.

I re-started System Restore and checked the Resource Monitor for System activity and it is Normal!....

I'll keep a closer eye on the HD activity for a while and see if it maintains itself.  The computer is back to its old self again: lean, mean and screamin'!  YeeHah!!!!!!

I thank you again for all you do for us, here, out in the ether...
