Hi Shane

A while back I used your program with reset registry,file permissions and register system files checked. Everything is fine but now all of my user specific folders in explorer have a little icon over the bottom left corner of them. How do I get explorer to show just the folder with out icon (the icon is a picture of two people, head with shoulders)?

I have seen this happen on 3 machines so far. And only 3. Those are the sharing icons. (These machines where windows 7)

Windows thinks they are shared even though they are not and they don't even show up in the share list. I have found it only shows up for the users profile and no other folders.

I would love to find out what cause this glitch. I don't know what is special about these machines that have had it happen when hardly anyone else has it happen to them. But if your willing to work with me I would like to find a fix and get it added to the repair

First lets see if any of those folders show up in the registry where shares are stored.

Nothing in those keys but my hp deskjet and print spool info. I'll be out for a while tonight, I'll get back to you later.

Forgot to mention that I'm on vista. That kind of blows the whole windows 7 only problem out of the water LOL.

It is late. But we can at least take a look at a few things.

From reading this is it s bug for sure. (In fact one of the machines that had it was vista after all)

I wonder if somehow removing the icon database made windows get confused on what icons are suppose to appear?

S system I reinstalled had this same problem. But the customer needed it back so I couldn't spend time on it.

Here is what I found. When i tried to delete a folder with the shared icon windows would say it was shared. So you go to sharing and it says it isn't shared. In order to remove the shared icon on the folder I had to share it then remove the share.

So it seems like it something in the middle. The folders are not actually shared but Windows think they are. So this tells me we need to find out what else windows looks at to think a folder is shared. It obviously looks at more than just the registry

Looking at it closer, it only appears to be certain links i.e documents, desktop, contacts, downloads, favorites, links, saved games and searches and traces as well as everything within these folders. My music and pictures links don't.

Why only the folders under the profile as well?

Lets see if the net share command sees them.

Open a command window and put in
net share

What do you get? Or I should say, do they show up there?

OK the sharing service doesn't see them. They are not shared.

Explorer.exe thinks they are for some reason. It is explorer that gave me the message when deleting a folder with the icon and it is explorer that is displaying the icon.

Ok good we know where we need to look.

How does explorer.exe tell is a file or folder is shared?

Quick note. I have been using cubic explorer for my file manager. If I open windows explorer I get the same thing.

Lets check the shared icon overlay entry.

Go to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Network\SharingHandler

Doubleclick (Default)
Remove the value that is presentely there
Click OK

Of course backup that reg key first

Then reboot.

The value there is ntshrui.dll. Remove this?

Remove ntshrui.dll from the (Default) and then reboot.

Go to the system32 dir and find ntshrui.dll and go to the properties of it then the details tab

No problem Take your time. I'm off until next year, so I have a little bit of time to research myself. I'm married with two young daughters as well. Can't sit around all day and mess with it.
