Windows Repair tool don't run
« on: April 03, 2021, 03:11:22 am »
Hi forum,

I have run portable version of the tool, it did the check but it doesn't appear. I'm having the problem that taskbar is frozen, I can't see files unless I surf them by cmd, and windows takes a lot to start (it stucks on login, please wait screen). Can you help me?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Jose

This article may help with that but if you need to run a sfc /scannow then run the dism /restorehealth cmd first and then the sfc /scannow.

The sfc /scannow should then report either that it has found and repaired all corruption or that didn't find any integrity violations.

https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/taskbar-frozen.html

Let me know if this helps with the frozen taskbar and stuck login.

It could be your antivirus program is hanging onto files as it boots up, in which case a reinstall of your AV program may help.

Hi Boggin,

I don't have AV program, just Windows Defender. Also, I have run:
sfc /scannow: no integrity violations
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth: restore completed sucessfully
sfc /scannow: no integrity violations

I have already done everything on the tutorial you sent, I have been 3 days checking over internet things and nothing works.

Thank you.

Perhaps a repair install will help.

A repair install doesn't affect personal files or installed programs but you will need to create Win 10 install media first which you can do after reading the instructions at -

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

It's been found that you need to use Internet Explorer to download the ISO.

You will need to open Windows Explorer which you can do through the Task Manager/File/Run new task by typing explorer.exe and pressing enter.

Click on This PC - insert the install media and double click on its drive.

This will start the process when using a DVD but will open to its files when using an USB where you would then double click on setup Application.

I cannot run it on safe mode. On normal mode, when I try to run setup.exe I said Permission denied. I have an admin account.

Can you boot up with the install media usually by tapping F12 as you switch on then use the cursor keys to select the media you are using - insert the media and press enter.

Navigate to the Install screen and select Repair your computer/Troubleshoot and select Command Prompt.

At the prompt enter bcdedit |find "osdevice"

For clarity that is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

Using your partition letter instead of the X I have exampled, enter these cmds -

dism /image:X:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=X:\ /offwindir=X:\Windows

Enter exit to close the cmd window, remove the install media and reboot to see if there is any change.

You may be able to perform the repair install now.

If you still get the Access Denied problem then download the Windows Repair program from - www.tweaking.com and use it to boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

You can click on your WiFi icon if it works then click on your SSID and then on Connect, left click away to close the pane, otherwise you will need to Ethernet connect.

Open the repair program in that mode and select just the first five repairs which may be already default checked.

Reboot when done to see if you still get the Access Denied error when you double click on setup.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi again,

I did everything but it said access denied to run setup.exe. Also, the repair tool just check files but doesn't show up. I don't have internet for some reason (eth connected).

Thank you.

Update: I got the tool working and I have run first 5 steps. However, it doesn't fix anything.

Do you have an Internet connection in normal mode - wireless or Ethernet ?

If you have, can you download the registry hack just before section 5 in this article and then try the setup.exe again.

https://windowsreport.com/exe-files-not-opening-windows-10/

There are other suggestions in this article if that doesn't work.

Did the sfc /scannow cmd in that mode report anything when it completed ?

I wouldn't expect the dism /restorehealth cmd to report anything other than successfully completed unless it found something it could fix.

EDIT - Just read your latest post - try the registry hack and then see if you can run the setup.exe to perform a repair install.

If none of those suggestions resolves then all I can suggest is a Reset.

Press and hold SHIFT throughout a restart and select Reset.

It has an option to retain your personal files, although it may be worth backing those up.

This is the next best option to a clean install but you will still need to reinstall all of your programs so it would be best to make a note of any product keys should you have any paid for programs.
