Cannot connect to scanner
« on: April 01, 2020, 05:57:18 pm »
Hello, I have a new Windows 10 pro installation, 64-bit. I also have an older Epson v500 perfection scanner. I installed the Epsom software and drivers and at first it worked and then it stopped working. When I try to run the software, it says that it doesn't detect my scanner, even though it's plugged in with the USB cable. I have run tweaking several times
Thank you
SE

I would suggest that you go online and search for a Win 10 driver for the scanner to see if that resolves, but create a manual restore point first before installing anything.

Just this one if yours is the Photo version - https://www.epson.co.uk/products/scanners/consumer-scanners/epson-perfection-v500-photo/Support-Downloads

Had you forgotten that you had already registered on the forum ?

While some Win 7 drivers will work on Win 10 you do sometimes have to update for Win 10.

Win 7 drivers work just fine on Win 10 for my Epson SX425W All in One printer.

can win 10 be reinstalled in place without wiping out the hard drive, like win xp could do?

Yes, it can in the form of a repair install that doesn't affect your personal stuff or installed programs.

This probably wouldn't change your scanner drivers though.

There is another option which is a Reset which has the option to retain your personal stuff but will remove all of your installed programs.

This will put an icon onto your desktop with a list of all of the programs it has removed.

My introduction to Windows 10 is proving to have a sharp learning curve. I created a username for and logged into Nvidia which auto upgraded my graphics driver but this was also also correlated with the loss of most of my taskbar set up, all the  data in my downloads folder, and many programs now need to be re-registered- adobe, office, etc. So I have to figure out if there's a way to tell Nvidia not to upgrade drivers automatically, to give me a chance to do a backup first. I still haven't solved the driver problem with my Epson scanner and I have installed and reinstalled the software that was pointed out above. Steve

Did Windows create a restore point before it updated your graphics drivers you could use to revert to the older driver ?

This may not revert your registration to Nvidia though.

This article may help in disabling the auto update -

Because of the Caronavirus Epson seemed to have closed down their help centres so you wouldn't be able to get any advice from them.
