Have you tried to see if they will open in Safe Mode with Networking ?
While Malwarebytes shouldn't interfere, isolating it and any other 3rd party program by booting into that mode should let you know if it is the volume or MBAM.
Can you download the trial version of HDSentinel which will give a written report on the status of the HDD.

Selecting Save on the Download will allow you to reinstall from your Downloads Folder as and when you want to use it next.
The fact that you had problems right from the reinstall would suggest something else is amiss rather than it being a software problem.
I don't know which updater program you use and I stopped using them, but was impressed with DriverHub which you could give a try, but I would think a driver would still need to be installed to check for an update for it.
