Stumped.
The squares over icons just happened - at least I don't recall doing anything stupid.
Screenshot of problem area attached - I think this is how I post pictures, instructions little hazy on same.
Anybody?

Try this first
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/repair_icons.html

That will remove the icon cache from the system, you will need to reboot after you run it.

If that doesn't fix it let me know

Thx for the input.  Tried it, it successfully ran, rebooted, no change.
Thoughts:
1.  System icons not effected,  just my personal icons.
2.  Tried creating a new desktop icon, immediately got a black square.
3.  Removed and replaced an icon, black square.
4.  Sys is win7sp1; nvidia gets in the display act with its overkill control panel - running a geforce 570 - checked its tweaks, nothing looks like it would matter.
5.  Moved icons to second monitor, still black squares.
6.  Right clicked the desktop, changed the size of the icons to extra large and  NO black squares - attach 1.
Changed back to small icons, black squares -  attach 2.
Changed to medium size icons, black squares.
Changed back to large icons, NO black squares.

I'm definitely stumped now

OK lets first find out if it is something wrong with the profile or something on the system as a whole.

Make a new profile, just as a test.

Log into that new profile, does it happen there as well?

If it works fine in the new profile then I know it is something in the profile and I will have an idea of where to focus, if it still is black in a new profile then I know as well where to start :-)

Sorry I didn't respond any sooner but other things got in the way.  I'm still stumped but for another reason this time.  After maybe half a dozen boots the black squares have disappeared altogether.  Just maybe your icon cache refresher did work only it took more than one reboot.  Now that I don't have the problem I have nothing to check.  Do appreciate your time and I wish we could of found out what was the culprit but what can I say?

One thing to keep in mind should this happen again is as I was Googling around b4 I came here I read some talk about black squares being the result of attempts at removing the little arrows from the icons.  Never looked into that much and none of what I read really offered any ways of checking the above.  But food for later thought.

Thx again,
